It's the missing words that provoke the arguments! Imagine trying to reconstruct a Terry Pratchett book, in 3 ancient languages, with every 8th or so word missing and then half a page!

The translation would be totally biased towards the scholar's beliefs and of course who was paying them!

Sue, I agree, the translation is the key, I think, and it certainly depends on not only the depth of faith, but the type of faith - I am sure a muslim scholar will translate differently from a christian one.

I think that we will see a time when the entire bible is re-written as scholars come to an agreement on the translations.....

I have been following the new translations for some time.

I have a real problem with the 'given' translations and the new, modern interpretations.

Take ten scholars give them one incomplete page each and you get ten different translations of the original writings.

Which interpretation you choose depends on your depth of faith I suppose.

Then there is the contemporaneous question? If I was asked to record an event/dictat decades or centuries after the event would I get it right?

Been reading the trancripts of these fascinating things, and have to wonder at some of the passages. Bear in mind these were written 2,000 years ago and translated from the original, not like the current bible. But I digress...

This passage really grabbed me and put me in mind of the 'God was an Astronaut' series of books by Von Daniken....
