General Chat

My family are always teasing me and calling me "Havachat" so I try not to get into conversation.
When we were on a plane to Hobart last month I had a lady next to me who seemed nervous. My OH suggested I talk to her. I couldn't shut her up. I had her whole life history during the landing and taxiing of the plane and all I had said was "Do you come from Hobart?"
She also gave me a complete tourist guide to Hobart with all the best eating places.

Oh Huia, can you imagine us together then lol
Your poor man would frown more than a bit if he heard us chattering away.
Hope you are ok, and not too cold - off to bed now, o.h. will be up in a bit for his second week of cycling, is off to get his new bike today and return the borrowed one.

Here was I with the impression that you Poms were a reserved bunch! When my son was in England about 15 or 20 yrs ago with his 2 cousins they were laughing away on a bus and got a lot of cold glares.

I must admit when I was walking the streets of Ely at 6.15am a man who was walking his 2 dogs asked me if I had heard about Di and Dodi. He had been the first to speak. I will never forget where I was when I heard about their deaths.

I will chat to anybody these days (well, not some of the drunks or weirdos perhaps). I am making up for the time when I wouldnt say boo to a goose as a young child and teenager. Unfortunately if my OH is with me he tends to frown on it a bit. But then he was a Pom. And I do tend to talk a bit too loudly for his liking, perhaps because I am a little hard of hearing.

I strike up a conversaton with anybody anywhere - do it all the time - I love it when I'm in somewhere like M & S and there's a man holding a ladies garment in his hand - I say "It'll never suit you, not your colour"

In the UK, we are not generally known for being especially open/friendly to strangers we meet occasionally - but, if they happen to be walking with their pet dog, we have no hesitation in having a hug & a chat to the animal, while the owner stands there with an embarrassed grin.

We are repeatedly reminded to 'love our enemies' - but, maybe we should treat our friends a little better.

i bit unsure to approach people an djust start chatting,

but sometimes i think in situations like mentioned abouve its fate, i think you meet up with people for a reason

At train station in Wrexham yesterday morning I saw a woman who I thought I recognised from 40+ years ago when I did my nurse training. While my son was busy on his mobile I went over and said 'hello'. I was worried I'd picked on a total stranger but it was her and she also recognised me. My son was mortified when I got back. Said he'd never do what I did.
I think it has something to do with confidence as well as wanting to reach out to others who appear sad or lonely.

I agree Liz, it would be a sad place if we all kept ourselves to ourselves. And anyway, if we didn't talk to other people how would we know anything about other people and their lives. It's very important to talk.

Well I am sure you will have guessed that I am one of those who will talk to anyone. My Mum was the same, I learned from her and have made many new friends over the years just by chatting. Got talking to a woman on the bus to Gt. Yarmouth last week and she is going to phone me when she gets back from her visit away as she doesn't live far from Norwich so can come in for a coffee sometime, she lives alone in a very small village and lives alone so gets fed up with her own company.
My Dad used to tell Mum off and my o.h. says to me, Oh you're not talking again are you, but if he was better company maybe I wouldn't need to chat to others so much!
I agree that it doesn't hurt to be a good listener or to chat with a lonely person or a person travelling alone, it passes the time and makes their day brighter as well as ours. I have often come away lifted from speaking with someone I just met.
Would be a sad old place if we all kept ourselves to ourselves.

Met a man in France who came from the Midlands three hundred miles away.His brother was married to the daughter of our neighbour.

I talk to anyone and everyone... no-one is sacred!! Or spared.

Ann of GG and I were having lunch once... and we ended up chatting to the two ladies on the table next to ous... I started the conversation, but have to say that Ann was right there with me, lol

Yesterday, I chatted quite happily to two elderly gentleman in the *leave yer fella here while you try on stuff* bit... and there was a lady in the till queue Ann in Glos and I chatted to

I took the Isle of White bus with a friend and her young cousin a few years ago.... it was fabulous..... we had to go back the next day and do the stop offs, as I refused to get off the first day and did the whole tour..... well, it was raining!!

Had a wonderful time chatting to people, their lives are so interesting. "Young cousin" was mortified at first.... but fascinated and having a really good time by the end of it. Friend is just resigned to me being me. ;¬))

The next day, we did one of the stops at Osborne (sp) House and met up with one of the young families from the day before... my friend is a Makaton instructor.... and I use a bit, and the middle girl in the family used it to communicate.... we had made their day the day before by chatting to her.... and at Osborne House (sp) they invited us to share their picnic with them.... it was a fantastic day, which we wouldn't have had but for a blind man's guide dog sitting under my seat and licking my feet the day before!! That's how it all got started.

Do you know, I had forgotten all about that..... and my friend explaining in Makaton how Victorians didn't wear knickers!!

I met a lady on the train yesterday when I was travelling from Wolverhampton to Coventry. She used to be head teacher of a school I often worked at on the south Kent coast, ....before I went there.
She asked if I knew a headteacher from another primary school near there.... Yes...she lives about 1 minute's walk from my house.!

Lady's daughter is really into family history....just HAD to have a little chat about that, ..Lol ...and she did her training near where many of my ancestors come from.

Such alot to talk about, I was in Coventry before I knew it....

I got talking to an elderly lady at the bus stop, when she told me she'd just got some photo's reprinted for her grand daughter. S
She took them out to show me - there was a very pretty young woman in Australia holding a Koala. She told me she used to visit a Koala sanctuary, and the next photo showed one of the Koala 'nurses' - it was an Alsatian dog with two baby koalas clinging to her back!! Absolutely fascinating.
I meet her quite often and we always get chatting now :o)

Good to see there are some more chatters here.
As Teresa's story shows, it's important to be a good listener too.
On a bus near here recently a lovely elderly lady told me all about her little dog, who had been put to sleep a few days before. She was on her way to have some photos framed and showed them to me.
It was her first outing without him and she thanked me for letting her talk.... I hope it helped.

Daughter was going to a course on the train with her boss. They started talking about things (they're in the Environment Department), when this man came over and said he's been to where they were talking about - and he used to be our neighbour! Then another man who had been listening came over and said he used to go to school with daughter's boss!!
