Tracey that was my first thought, about the cord. Perhaps she wasn't due and went into premature labour. I hope she will get access to the counsel she needs.

Dermot,

Termination is a totally different subject to this case.

Its easy to make assumptions when 'we' dont know the full story....and that applies to terminations and this case.

Tracey Report 21 Jul 2008 22:51

Who's to say it was an abortion or murder, it could well of been strangled by its own cord, the mother being immature and very distressed did not know what to do and if bleeding as heavily as claimed I doubt she was physically able to do much more.

I know I'll get shouted at - but, here goes!

Last year, around 200,000 babies were aborted (legally or otherwise) in the UK.

That's my lot on the subject.

Deanna Report 21 Jul 2008 17:40

I wonder how her state of mind is... seems a drastic thing to do.
Think I will wait and see what the news is when they get the whole story.
Poor baby.
Poor woman.

I agree --let's wait till we hear all sides of the story--

Eldrick Report 21 Jul 2008 16:39

In the UK, we have the offence of infanticide as opposed to murder, when the child is under 12 months old. The UK law recognises that a mother may do things to a child whilst the balance of her mind is disturbed.

I stress that I am quoting the law, not insinuating that this mother was insane or anything at all - no one has any way of knowing what her mental condition is or was.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 21 Jul 2008 16:25

It sounds very sad. but I think we need to hear the whole story before we jump to conclusions. For a start if the baby was due, how did she manage to get a flight, if she was full term I wonder nobody on the airline challenged her.

But I will wait and see what the truth of it is.

PinkDiana Report 21 Jul 2008 16:09

A 20-year-old British woman has been charged with the murder of her baby in Crete, the Foreign Office has said.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of strangling her baby after giving birth in a hotel room in the resort of Malia.

Police said the baby was found with sheets around its neck and covering its face. A coroner's report concluded the child died of asphyxiation.

The woman had been taken to hospital on the Greek island, suffering from heavy bleeding after giving birth.

Holiday trip

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm a British national was charged with the murder of her baby in Malia, Crete, today. We are providing consular assistance."

The Foreign Office said the ongoing police investigation meant it would make no further comment.

Greek police spokesman Panagiotis Stathis earlier said: "A young British girl, 20 years old, has been arrested in Malia on suspicion of child murder.

"She will be taken before the prosecutor, who will decide the charges."

The police spokesman added that the woman had travelled to Crete on holiday with her sister and a female friend from the UK.
