Just going to have my dinner, so will say goodnight to everyone.

Our council take most things, including thick cardboard in our blue recycling bin.

I work for a small company that generates a lot of recyclable waste. We are not allowed to have a recycling bin as they are only for domestic use. So we take the waste home. We have just been informed that it amounts to fly-tipping with a £10,000 fine!!

Hi Our council is Recycle mad its great .We have recently been supplied with an extra big wheelie bin and can put bottles, plastic, cans & tins in this one . The other two are for Household,Garden and cardboard waste. We only have to call the local Council office if we need large electrical or furniture removed and they book you in for free collection
Not bad .I must say i haven't seen any fly tipping in our area

We have weekly kerb-side collection for recycling tins and cans, glass, paper / cardboard and some plastics.

I wish councils would collect and recycle many other plastics too as it bugs me to have to put into the landfill bin, all those plastic items, eg yoghurt pots which bear a clear recycling sign.

I wash them and take them to local primary school for use as paint or glue pots, so at least they get used a few more times before eventually being thrown out.

We have alternate weekly collections of 2 wheelie bins
1) Household waste
2) Garden waste...... I use it for weeds, shrub prunings etc which won't easily compost.

We have to pay for Garden waste collection. It was free but this year a £35 fee was introduced, ..£25 if you paid before a certain date.
Compost bins have to be bought.

Bulky household items are collected for fee of £15 per item.

Joanne
They don't exactly encourage recycling in your area do they?

Hello Vods.....here in S. Herts, ours take cardboard, tree twigs etc.....as long as the cardboard is flattened and the twigs are not too thick, along with the waste in the green recycling wheelie......we also have a small green box for plastic bottles and tins, a black one for newspaper, paper and telephone books, and a brown basket for glass bottles, and the black one for general waste.....

The charge £10 or £15 per item to collect furniture or kitchen equipment, or even bathroom items....

I still think the Germans have a good idea......they have a collection point once a month, and you can put unwanted items at this point, and anyone can come along and take what they want.....all that is left is taken the next day.......its a bit like freecycle....

Sally
My children loved the German bulk rubbish days.
Daughter's doll was pushed around in an elegant Silver Cross pushchair gained that way.
We also had a very useful small bookcase for their bedroom and a toy Welsh dresser which was played with for years back here in England.

We have German friends and used to stay with them, and them with us......so we could see the differences.......they loved the fact that we had our milk delivered in a bottle to the back door.......and loved our parks.....

They live in Neu Isenburg, 30 miles north of Frankfurt am Main......I was surprised at the quality of the stuff left......and one time they found a tandem frame, and over time built themselves a tandem.....

I am not surprised that you got bargains Gwyn and Maz......another thing I noticed that there was not much graffiti, the roads and pavements were well maintained and litter free....... they thought our streets were a bit dirty, but just loved our relaxed and informal way of talking to each other.......

Our Council - Southampton, take cardboard, plastic bottles, but no margarine or yoghurt tubs, or the trays meat and veg come in. Also tins go in same bin.

ASDA and other car parks have bins for the Yellow Pages, and bottles,

They have recycling bins by our local estate shops, and also at the main supermarkets, for books, shoes, clothes as well as newspaper plastic and bottles.....

......another thing I remember Maz, is that my friends used to live in a flat, and at certain times each day the flats must be kept quiet, no noisy children, washing machines, hoovering etc....
