Brian, it's always reassuring to know there are humans out there that have these feelings towards animals - as indeed, there are many many humans like you.

A few years ago, we came across a beautiful hare one evening, sat in the middle of the road. At that time of night, the road wasn't at all busy. We stopped, keeping a lookout for it. Then a car came zooming up and hit it; it was obviously done deliberately. We were too shocked to take the registration number. I say it was done deliberately, because the car had been going not very fast, then suddenly the driver accelerated towards the hare. Our teenage children were distraught, and our daughter said the male driver was laughing as he drove over it !!!!!
The hare was convulsing in the road as the car drove away, and thankfully some decent folk stopped to wring its neck.
I'll never forget that experience, and felt so strongly about it that we wrote to our local paper.
My hubby accidentally hit a baby rabbit a few months later, which was awful but it just came out of nowhere. We stopped and hubby put it out of its misery, but it upset us all the same.
So help me God, I hope the scum who did that to the hare gets his just desserts.

I have not killed an animal so far in my driving, but I did witness where someone knocked over a large dog (it survived the hit). I still (years later) know where it happened and it can distress me.

If I see a cat near where I am driving I do tell it to stay put til there are no cars but you can never know when the cat or any other animal (except dog unless they are alone) will cross. I always look in my rear mirror if a bird was on the road when I was driving just to check it was ok.

My thoughts are with you because I now I would be totally distraught if it happened to me.

Firstly apologies for the computer thread last night. thought it was my message which had gone awry.(similar thinking)
I saw at first hand what a collision with a labrador was like. Dead dog and a very damaged car etc.

I am always interested when people tell me that they wouldn,t stop or swerve if something ran out in front of them.
My feeling is that if you have chance to think then you will stop - or drive straight on if you are callous. If it is "suddenly". you swerve.
Theory arrives from 30 years in the police, but I,m sure someone will tell me I,m wrong.

I was out with my son one day... a few years back, and there was a terrified Squirrel on the road, it did not know which way to run.
My son slowed down to a near stop, to let it run home...
It touched me to see that he was as gentle a man as he had been a boy.

I have just had the horrible job first thing this morning of trying to save a baby blue tit from our Feline Monster.

It looked OK, so we got ladders out and put it high in the hedge, but I think the little thing died of fright.

Love my Cat, but this is the downside of them.

My daughter & hubby who lives in Brittany, hit a wild boar last year.It ran off, seemingly unhurt, but their car was very badly damaged.Her daughter & partner hit a young deer recently, it didn't die outright.G.daughter was extremely upset, had nightmares for a long time.

Some years ago OH was driving to work in the early hours and a fox ran out in front of him in a narrow lane and he had no where to go. It upset him terribly altho he didn't say anything for several days i could see he was much quieter than normal,( he is a quiet man anyway) I sensed something was wrong when i saw him reading his Catholic Missal several times and had to coax out of him what was troubling him. He felt very guilty he had run over it, he heard the car hit the fox so knew it hadnt missed.
he need loads of reassurance that he didn't stand a chance of missing the Fox and that he would be forgiven .

At this timeof the year the young crows are trying to find territories.The little boys have it very hard where there are established big boys in residence.
Try to find comfort in the fact that you and the squirrel provided a meal for a needy carrion eater.The crow may even reward you by having a few of the leatherjackets out of your garden.

I once hit a blackbird that flew out of a hedge..............I had no chance of missing it, so I picked it up, took it home and buried it in the garden, poor thing:(

Friends in Namibia don't drive at night because kudu (sort of athletic cow things) jump into the road.

Deer can be really bad if you hit one.
You used to see the odd one in winter when they came down from the hills to feed.
Now you see them all the time. Very dangerous for drivers.

Used to hit baby rabbits all the time in Cornwall (not intentionally by the way) OH used to make me stop the car and go and make sure that they had been killed outright - one which had been clipped by the tyre and was alive but badly injured she made me reverse over to put it out of pain....felt awful

I'll never forget the day there was a pidgeon on the road,I told my oh to slow down, he said 'oh it will soon move'...I'll never forget that thud and seeing all the feathers flying ;((
