Thought you might like to know I have found a possible match in someone else's family tree for Mary Wheeler born 1883 in Windsor. I have contacted them - so fingers crossed - they might be able to tell me something useful.

Alexander Wheeler the brother got married in 1905, no marriage for Mary Elizabeth up to 1905 that I could see.

And no mention anywhere of the army so it looks like that may have been a figment of her imagination and I would think the mother is the younger Mary but I don't think you are going to be able to prove it.

I think Grmaine and Ann are right. It is probably the younger Mary Elizabeth. I will check the marriage certificate of the parents and try to get as much info about this family as possible. Who knows there might be a clue somewhere else in the family tree. I will also try to find out what happened to the younger Mary Elizabeth.

Perhaps if he was in the Guards,,,,,,his officer could have played a part in the that he was forced to give the child his name if the birth mother filed a complaint,,,??scandle ,,or maybe he was invented,?

I agree with Ann Liz.
I have a marriage where the groom put down Frank as his fathers name and then put his Grandmothers name as his mothers name.( they married in USA). He was born out of wed lock and we have never been able to find his fathers name.
We think he just plucked Frank out of the air.

I think this may be the parents amrriage which would point to Annie being daughter of the younger Mary Elizabeth.
Oh yes it was so easy to lie.
I am sure my Grandfather lied also my Granny lied or forgot :-) her age when she married.

I have the birth certificate for Annie Alexandra - thanks.
I wonder if she put a relative's name on the birth certificate. I think it is strange that she is recorded as Wheeler formerly Wheeler. It doesn't ring true. Even the Royal Guards bit might be fanciful. But to what extent could people lie on birth certificates? Does anyone know the rules/regulations? Was it easy to lie?

she may just have put that name on the birth cert. In 1903 there would have been a lot of shame for being an unmarried mother and a lot of cover ups. You may never know.

Liz did you read my post? Was she the 40 year old's child or the 20 year old's? Alexander snr age 40 was a tea dealers clerk in 1901 no mention of the army.

Sorry - just got your response now. What did the royal house guards do I wonder. The father would have been in his 50s by the time WW1 started, so would he have fought?

Maybe the natural mother died or even the father...??

Thanks Germaine too! So the mother would have been about 43 yrs when Annie Alexandra was born. I wonder why they gave her up for adoption...
