Suffragettes, campaigned for women’s rights to vote, and for equal rights.

But by the 1930s, social roles were still clearly defined. --
“A woman's place was in the home, -- a man's place was out at work.”

Then, World War 2, saw women working the land, building tanks, working in rescue teams, and operating behind enemy lines.

Today, we have the gains of the Social, and Feminist Movements, of the 1960s.

Ello Steve

For me I think the suffragettes as it was them that lit the spark which has moved women into wanting and earning equality.

Probably World War 2 as that, for the first time in history, got almost all the women into the work-force and showed society that women could do so much more than stay at home looking after the menfolk and having children.

All of the above,

WW1 created the suffraggettes- lack of men returning and lots of spinisters. WW2- woman had to keep the home fires burning and created a 'can do' attitude

If we didn't have one we wouldnt have the other.

Personally wasnt keen on the 'burning bra' brigade, and 'if you cant beat em join em.'

I still like to be feminine I dont want to be a bloke just want to have equal rights- employment, pay, opportunities.

I would think it would be a culmination of all those things as they are all intertwined! One paving the way for the other. Mary Wolstencroft wrote a Vindication of the Rights of Women" way before the suffragettes and don't forget that ww1 had a major impact on British Society!

All three were very important, but one leads to another. The Suffragettes really made that first move, without them I am not so sure everything else would have followed so quickly.

I think women having the right to vote had a strong impact on women wanting to work to help their men and the men allowing it to happen.

I wonder if women didnt have the right to vote how quickly they would have been accepted in the second world war as equals? I am sure they would have towards the end out of need - but I think the way was paved for them by the Suffragettes.

And for any women out there that dont vote - think about what those women went through to give you that right..... dont ever throw it away.

I bet there were quite a few households pre-war where the women said "yes dear"...............then did whatever they wanted to anyway:))

Maybe society isn't hugely different, who knows:)

it didnt only apply that women were seen able and capable for mans work during WW2,,,,,,,,,they did it in WW1.........I have 1916 photo of women putting Tar on the roads while the men folk were of to war, what about the shell filling factories land work,,,,,,,,,,yet still wasnt seen as an equal.to vote till 1928..

I think by mid 1930's women were taking a more upfront role ,,,,,,,,,so sufferage was a major turning point in my choice,,,,,,,,
