Ok - I can solve one mystery. What happens to socks?
I have pondered long and often over this problem (4 children)
I can tell you with absolute assurance that socks are the larval form of coathangers!

Socks crawl into wardrobes and pupate, emerging as fully functional coathangers of all descriptions.

This elegant solution also answers the problem: where do all the extra coathangers come from?

How do wire coat hangers breed? Put a couple of them in your wardrobe and you end up with hundreds. Also where do teaspoons go when they leave home?

I thought the sock problem would end when the kids left home but last time I looked there were about half a dozen odd socks in our airing cupboard waiting for their mates to turn up.

I was doing some sorting the other day and found several odd gloves too!

Where do they go?
