Lindsey you will find this happens quite often. You find some info for someone who pm's you their thanks.
Sometime later they go back through their contacts & have forgotten who you are.

Lindsey, lol that sounds like my husbands Australian convict. He was sent over in the 1850s, and remarried. Ive been in touch with some of his ancestors over there but they totally deny he could have been a criminal. Even though his new wife had such an unusual name we all know it's the right people!

If there are no matches, then how did they get in touch with you.? Have you any reason to think someone is trying to contact you that you don't want to. Usually I will happily show someone my tree, while I have noticed that some are reluctant even though there are matches. I think maybe some people are just over cautious. Sue

Ive got a relative who put his girlfriend and child on a boat to Oz, he jumped ship and sailed off to Us with another woman ! Its well documented, but the Ozzie side refuse to believe they are from illigitimate stock. They seem to think because their grandfather has 2 surnames he must be very posh!
So now Ive now printed out a standard reply as I'm fed up with the yeah but no but replies and the time it takes for replies from Oz.
Just as I think its sorted another one pops up.I wonder why they don't talk to each other?

All i'll say is we all had to start somewhere once and we have all needed help. So whats wrong with passing on help to others if you now know you can?

Lindsey's funny with her tree stalker. ;)

I get them all the time too. You post some help with somebody's question, and all of a sudden (or even better, a month later) you have an "I have shared my tree" message.

My favourite was a thread in which I did a fair bit of work, and then got a PM saying "yes, we knew that, we want to know ...". (Yes, and good luck with that then, friend.) Followed by a tree-shared message. Followed, two weeks later, by a PM saying "yes, we knew that, we want to know ...". Followed by a tree-shared message.

I think two people were sharing an account but not otherwise communicating ...

Aha, I think the mystery is clearer, a newby !
After my gestapo style interrogation turns out hes looking for info, and got my name from the boards,no relation.
Ive sent info by email and await a thankyou, Ha ha, not holding my breath !
Now I feel like a heel for being suspicious so its the naughty step for me !!

I always ask people how they think we have a connection first.

If their relationship is really rather remote then I think that they will be helped more if I only send them details of relevant people.

The only people I share my tree with are those who'd share a lot of ancestors with me and who might find it helpful to see the tree.

I always think that if only a small branch or even a little twig is all we have in common then expecting anyone to browse around on my tree is going to be confusing anyway and it is simpler just to tell them about the connection in a message.

Not that it worries me too much because no-one living is named on my tree and I don't add my sibling or my cousins, let alone any of their children.

my tree on here is small, the rest is in emails and on paper, and if i find someone related i pass all that info on to them, so opening my tree wont get them much help on here.... but at least i know genuine rellies asking are getting the right info from me.....
hope that makes sense....

Lindsey are you sure that this isn't someone that you've been helping over on Records sending you their tree?

i dont show my tree unless i know they have some of the people in mine but i do say to them if they give me names they are looking for i will find them and help that way

RStar

RStar Report 11 Apr 2008 15:54

I'd ask in what way they think they're related to you. Then its a matter of personal choice. I know Genes is about sharing, and we practically all do that, but in this day of identity fraud (and I really hate to say it, but potential abusers/stalkers) I think we have to be a bit careful/sensible.

Yes I'll help anyone if they tell me what they're looking for, but repeatedly sending me their tree with no message is odd.My last tree stalker must have sent me 20 blank messages, when I sent him to my full tree on another site he flounced off !
