think I've done just about all I want to do on my tree - 173 people on it, think that's sufficient - by the way for someone thick, what's FTM please?

Wanted to find where my fathers and mothers families originally came from. First night found a relly, we shared great grandfafhers. That was a good start.
Then went on from there.

A couple of years ago my younger daughter asked me how she fitted into the general scheme of things, and I realised I knew almost nothing about my family history.

Started finding out and got hooked. As for no 2 daughter, she isn't in the slightest bit interested. Suspect she was hoping to learn she descended from someone more illustrious than my gaggle of shoemakers, smiths of various colours, gunsmiths plus of course, countless Ag Labs.

Still marvel at just how widely spread my family roots are.

I joined in 2003 with just my basic rellies, in the hope of finding out more about my mum's side of the family. Her mum died in 1973 when my mum was only 19 and all we had to go on was the name Donovan in Sunderland as there had been no contact with the family since the 60's.Last year I delved into the births and discovered that my mum must have misheard the surname as her mother's maiden name was actually Donnigan!!
Once in the tree I discovered a match and then paid the fee so I could make contact. It was my mum's cousin and we have now had a lot of questions answered.
This heightened my interest in finding more to my other branches with the added fact that I discovered these boards. I have been hooked ever since.

I joined initially to see if I could find my dad's half brothers.....I did find one of his nephews..who as it happened just lived about 40 miles from me... we keep in touch and meet up fairly regularly... I have continued to research but very rarely post on the boards...

I set out to do my tree which I am still doing.
The boards to me are a bonus. Although I am not on here often, I have been in contact with some lovely, helpful people on here which is what keeps me coming back.
Take care xxx

~~~~~waves good morning~~~
I set out to find out who my family were - mainly my great grandparents. I have in fact found great great great grandparents and even one 4 x great on a line through other members.
Through one GR member called Cheryl, found a whole host of relatives on my grandmothers side of which I will be eternally grateful. Through her I have found out the name of my great grandmother, she was only ever known as great granny from Penarth but now I know her name to be Hannah - brilliant.
I also wanted to find out more on my mother's father's side and thought that this would be the last line to find anything on, to my utter amazement I have found out more on this line than any other and this is the line where I have gone back to the 1780's with the help of other GR members.
I still have a few relatives to find just to tidy up the tree but have been enjoying a break by chatting on the boards.
Of course one hopes that there will be a "famous" family member for whatever reason. But alas have not found any inventors, princes, knights of the realm etc etc lol.
I have enjoyed being a detective though! But did not realise when I started how very addictive it is. lol
Morning:)
I joined in 2003 specifically to contact someone who I could see was registered on the site. That was successful immediately.
I'd been doing my tree long before that anyway but mostly for ancestors in my area because I don't have the time to travel to ROs. I didn't have ancestry then and had so much help on Records (especially from Mary Whetton and Lynda Pace and a special breakthrough with the help of a lady called Pam) and also made some brilliant contacts.
I enjoy the chat sometimes but don't know if I'd keep up my subs if it wasn't for my tree because a lot of people I'm in touch with off the site. I had to remove my tree a little while ago but then I had an excellent contact last week as soon as I reloaded it so I'm still primarily here for the genealogy.
I set out to learn about my family and found more than I ever expected on here. Now I just hang around waiting for a little scrap more! But find I'm on the boards more than searching!
GR gave me the start I needed for my tree but is too basic. I moved my tree to FTM which I dont need to pay subs for after buying the programme it can cope with more than GR and is more user freindly.
I pay my subs to have a laugh on Gen these days and who knows ....... one day hot matches may work.
I have achieved a lot as found my birth father and now have a family tree for both my parents, not just my mums side.
Its harder for me to do searches other than the Internet and order certs as don't live in the UK but still enjoy it.
Plus I belong to the GReaders and The Birthday Girls so will still stay here for those.
xx Jill
and have you achieved what you intended?
If so, have you decided to stick around anyway to do other things or just to chat?
