As Personnel asked you if anything was amiss in the office, they must respect you to have asked for your input.....

......therefore I would go back to Personnel and nip this rumour in the bud........sounds like someone is out to cause upset.......before any more damage can be done, it is best to let them sort it out.......good luck.....x

Smashing outcome TW.

Went to see personnel first thing this morning, told her about it..she agreed it has to stop...and as to be nipped in the bud. I told her I was going to tell my line manager about it as I had a feeling this was more about discrediting her than me, and I don't believe for one minute she actually said it.

Saw my manager, she was fuming but it didn't take long to figure out where it came from...she then went to see personnel herself.

Hopefully we have blown the whistle on it before it really got going, but I don't know the outcome yet.

Had a word with the person who told me this in the first place, who stuck to the story until I told her what I had done that morning...and suddenly she had only overheard it...so I told her she was seen having coffee with the person who said it..no denials, but thats put a stop to her stirring too.

So hopefully it's all sorted without me having to go any further. I am quite prepared to speak to the union rep if I have to, but I have a feeling I won't need to.

So alls well that ends well. Thanks for the replies Malc and everyone.

Having worked in Personnel I think i would have liked to have known about the rumour so that I could stamp on it before somebody really got hurt. If they are concerned about people leaving they will want to know about problems. July Ann's was a good idea Tat way it shows you are concerned about your job and not telling tales.

Workplace misunderstandings and chinese whispers can be very hard to deal with. When you need a job, you put up with a lot is what ive found.

Go to see the manager and say "there's a rumour going around that I've had a written warning, I haven't had anything but the person who appears to have started the rumour, whom I don't know the name of, said that you told them that I'd had one. I just thought you should know as this could be someone mistaken, or deliberate malicious gossip spreading."

I'm concerned that if someone has said this about you, could it be that other rumours had been started about others who've left and that is part of why they've left. I feel you need to speak to the manager now in case the rumour spreader starts going the other way and tells the manager that YOU have said things you haven't.

Good luck, hun, I hate this sort of workplace harassment. I had a hell of a time when I worked at the local cinema during the summer hol at uni. Me and another girl were employed as summer relief to give the regular staff their holidays. They resented us because we were getting an education and had plans for our lives when they were stuck in their rut for the last X-amount of years. Rumours started being spread. I believed what the other temp told me and stood up for her. When I was physically threatened I went to the assistant manager (manager was away). I ended up leaving a couple of weeks early, because the stress made me physically ill.

TW ..I would bide my time before I did anything ..Reacting could be just the response someone is hoping you will give . Sit it out for a few days .. see what evolves and then if things get worse , have a chat with the manager .
