Our Zac was a choc lab, german shep cross. He was the proudest, loveliest, loyal and gentle dog I have ever had the privelege to own,

I had the most beautiful German Shepherd. I couldn't let her off her lead though. No she wasn't visicious she was a coward. One day on the beach only about 6 month old she suddnely yelped and did a runner saw a Weimaraner no she didn't run to it but away. What a job I had to catch up with her. When my sons Godson used to come she would run and hide. She did improve with age but never lost her gentleness.
Boy I miss that dog. As soft as she was I was never afraid to go out at night with her. No one would come near me.
It isn't the dog it is the way they are brought up
Got a Staffie cross now and she is so gentle and soft too. Though I think she had the stuffing knocked out of her poor mite is scared of raised voices even when son is watching football she comes and hides behind me.

friends of mine have a big alsation Mungo - a failed police dog!! and you can certainly see why. They acquired a very tiny black kitten which had to be hand fed for a week or two cos it was so small. This little kitten decided to suckle of Mungo after ploughing through layers of shaggy fur and Mungo just lay there. The kitten is now about seven months old and when I visited yesterday was surprised to hear that he is still suckling off Mungo!!

Quite often my 2 Staffies play with 3 German Shepherd dogs in the park. The 3rd one was rescued approx 18 months and looks at her owner with such love and devotion, and she is so gentle. Which is a surprise when you know of her history, she was so badly beaten that she had numerous broken bones, then the evil people that had her previously, set her feet on fire. The only punishment they received were banned from keeping dogs for 5 years and a fine.

It makes you want to cry.....

I've just started reading this thread & I'm sorry if someone has already said this but I take great exception to what Peter says on page 1 about Staffies & other Bull breeds.
It is a well known fact that cross bred dogs are more dangerous. You either end up with the "nice" qualities from both parents or the "bad".

At the minute I have two Staffies both soft as butter. My mam was scared of dogs before I got mine,she says they have restored her faith in dogs.
They are the most loving gentle friendly dogs.

Our Tilly we don't know what happened to her OH thinks she was beaten vet thinks it could have been a car. She has a limp and one of her fangs is broke.
Mind you she has a good bark even though she would probably lick them to death if anyone came in.

Bless all these 'tough' dogs eh, and poor old Mungo!! Germaine, I'm pleased you have a soft natured staffie too, I just love everything about these dogs and I'm one of their number one fans..

hi i dont think cross breed dogs are more dangerous than any other breed of dog all dogs have the potential to bite and attack lilymoon

I'm nudging this one to go with the thread on 'banned dogs'. Any other opinions?

Oh Anne, how can people be so cruel and they try to label these dogs as vicious.

Have to say I was absolutely terrified before my son came home with a hun of a pup, 3month old Staff (blue?) + we think mastiff. He is so soft, they're known as Nanny dogs. Yes, he's 5 months now and my garden looks more like a landfill, he's learning his place with our 2 cats and now ... well, I wouldn't swop him for the world.

Dogs, just like people, come in different shapes, sizes and temperament. I totally agree, it's how the owners treat them/bring them up that counts.

Now, I have a teenage son and that's a totally different matter!

Bad dogs..?? there ain't any..but the sad overaggressive owners with tattoes spikes and piercings with huge , often softie dogs..ARE!! and they use them as penis substitutes!! General point..owners ,,not dogs!

My staffie is nearly 13yrs old and has been absolutely brilliant with all my grandchildren who range from 1-16 yrs old .
They can take away her food and she just rolls over for her tummy to be tickled ,she plays hide and seek with them too .
I would trust her with any child .
Its the owners not the dogs that are at fault.

Now my daughters dog is a different story she has a terrier and what a nasty little thing it is ,i make her put it in the dinning room when i visit .

I think we've all proved that our 'tough/bad dogs' are the softiest ever......!!!!!!

You can't always go by breed as we have said.
Some smaller breeds are very snappy I suppose it is because a bigger dog can do more damage.
But as we have all said it isn't the dog it is the owners so I guess it is owners that should be vetted not the dogs.

we've always had German Shepherd's the one we have now is brill. people are scared of him because of his size and yet he has been attacked by different breeds and never retaliated. i think some people believe they are vicious because the police use them, but the police use them because they are intelligent. but i must add the trainer we used always said "never trust a dog 100%" ,and even though we love him to bits, we have taken the trainers advice.
