I had a few Saturday jobs - one was in BHS, the other on a clothing stall in an indoor market.

I could have left school at 15 with no qualifications but didnt want to end up working full time in a shop or factory - so stayed on another year and learnt to type.

First week after I left school my older sister was told to take me into town and get me a job. We went to an agency and I was working by the end of the week as a receptionist/telephonist/typist for a small company of quantity surveyors.

I actually wanted to be a florist but when my parents found out how little an apprentice florist was paid, they said that wasnt enough and they were not prepared to support me for 5 years.

But it was ok for my smarmy brother to become a low paid apprentice!

My sister was/is a very good artist and had the chance to go to art college after school - that wasnt allowed either.

Are we girls bitter? Just a tad. lol

My first full time job was working on the Isle of Wight ferries. It was only by chance through family history that I realized that there was over a 200 year history of generations of ferryman going right back to what were first called Wherries ( Rowing boats ) and also discovering ancestors who served on HMS Victory

I started work the day after my 16th birthday on a YTS scheme which was to run for 6 months at a clothing alterations shop.

My wage was £25 a week and after a month they offered me the job for real after the 6 months were up.

I stayed there for 8 years!

Worked as a Saturday girl at local chemist during last year of school, Wanted to join Police force but couldn't get in, so day after I had interview, the owner of the chemist offered me a full time job, took that and by the time I left 5 years later (due to getting married to a squaddie and going out to Cyprus) I was helping him dispense the prescriptions, Wish I had done some training for that as I used to enjoy doing it.
