1st one lasted 13 weeks, not nice:0((
Was told by the judge I would be excused from any further call ups...lol!
A year later was called up again, told them what judge had said....didn't matter...had another bad one:0(
Had my 3rd call up and went to the crown court, spoke with the clerk who was suprised to see me at the 2nd. She went into speak with the judge and had a letter drawn up for me to present along with my reasons for not attending the third:0))
I have kept the letter just incase:0)))))

did it in 1984, was put on one the first week murder but reduced to manslaughter to which they pled guilty. nothing for second week but didnt get sent home, they asked for people to volunteer for a trial that was going to last 2 months so i did
it started in early feb and finished in july it was a fraud case very boring but made some great friends with the other juriors we had a birth death and a wedding during the trial the judge told us if we were ever called again we could be exempted because we had served so long

I've been called up 3 times.

1st one i did, 2nd one i got out of, and the 3rd one we were told 2 day before we had to start, that a couple of cases had over run,so we didn't have to go as they would use the next lot of people instead .

The one that i did,i wanted the floor to open up and swallow me,
i had a tickley cough the more i tried not to cough the worse it got,
in the end they had to hold the court up while somebody when and got me a glass of water,
when we went back after lunch the judge didn't ask but just sent for water again,
i didn't need it because i had a pocket full of sweets, all afternoon i sat there trying to undo them without making a noise,it was so embarrassing.

My husband ,daughter and daughter-in law have also done jury service

I did it once in the 70s. Only one case and at the last minute (drugs found under the sink) he pleaded guilty. so we were not needed. The judge was very apologetic and took time to explain the procedure following a guilty plea. He then asked us to sit in on the sentencing.

As I worked for local government at the time my salary was paid as normal and I just got expenses for travel and lunch.

Hubbys self employed and we have to send in proposed estimate but after he has finished so we have 2 weeks plus what ever time they take to do them without money.

Luckily hubby doesnt charge much and £56 would cover his daily charges although isnt good having to wait what am I suposed to feed the children on thin air?

If I remember right we had to put in a claim for expenses, but I certainly didn't get the equivalent of a fiver a day, think I got £10 at the end. They didn't have a cafeteria in the courts (only small). A couple of the days I took a packed lunch because I knew we wouldn't get the money back. We did get coffee and biscuits as often as we liked though.

Katie, my uncle was in same situation with the self employed

Lyndi Report 10 Feb 2008 14:42

I got called last year - I went first day and hung around in the juror's lounge (we got a card with about £5 per day to spend at the cafeteria which was in the lounge)
Just before 4pm we were told to phone in next day, and was then told half of the jurors who had been called for that two weeks weren't needed, so I didn't have to go back!
The people of Norfolk must have been behaving themselves at the time!

I didn't even get that Katiemaw !!

If your employer won't pay you the court are supposed to. I was serving for 3 weeks and neither of them paid me. My parents had to keep me and give me spending money too.

It was Stray. We were absolutely disgusted and he was so cocky after too.

The other case, I wasn't selected for that one but because they couldn't just send the rest of us home we got to sit in. Was much more interesting but then the defendants changed their plea to guilty and we were all sent home.

In all it was pretty dull.

When I was in college we went on a trip to london, as part of it we went to the old bailey and sat in on a Murder trial. It was all bogged down with so much legalese I was glad we weren't on the jury, but the gyst of it was that this guy had killed two people and one of them he'd put in bin bags and taken her somewhere. Unfortunately it was set to go on for weeks and we had only one afternoon in the beginning. Never did find out how it turned out.

Hi Stray

Yes, I went on a shotgun murder (guilty) and a glassing (not guilty) about 20 years ago.

Hubs is due to do his in May. He was called up in September but it was the week following my hysterectomy so they gave him a deferral until May.

He's half looking forward to it and half dreading it.

I would love to do it again, although there can be loads of waiting around to be picked for a case, and that bit is soul destroyingly boring.

Have been twice, was on an incest case (found guilty) and a GBH where he was acquitted. The first was difficult as it was his word against hers but afterwards we found that he had another case pending for the same thing so we felt vindicated. Was called again for the third time but managed not to go on that one. Don't want to do it again
