I read somewhere (brain frazzled so can't remember where!) that there are some old telephone directories ie. BT, GPO etc. that have been archived...does anyone know if these are available online or whether I'd have to go somewhere to look at them, if so where? Sorry to sound so vague, it is monday after all! TIA Caroline |

Co-incidence I posted this on the Record Office board a couple of days ago. Apparently BT holds an almost complete archive of national telephone directories from 1880s at their building in Chancery Lane, London. Not sure how useful this could be as for instance my folks didn't get a phone till about 1958., but some seeking ancestors' addresses post 1901 census might find it useful . Has anyone visited this archive and what was your experience ? dave |

Ahhhhh, maybe that's where I read it then! ;o) Would be interested as well to know if anyone has been there and what it was like?? Would be helpful though to have these records online don't you think?? :o) Caroline |

On line would be nice, but not likely. :-) I think it was 60 directory volumes to cover the UK for a just year, just think of the number of directories they must have on their shelves if they have them back to the 1880s. dave |

That's why it would make more sense for everybody concerned if they were online, although I am realistic to see what a MAMMOTH task this would be and highly unlikely to happen! :o( |
