How about this for a few bits of formatting (Lesley - don't put all info in your original post as it strips formatting, start thread and put see below, then reply to your own message with info - it will then keep formatting). Jools My grt grt Grandmother is named on my grt grandfathers marriage certificate as Mary Calashaw whom i have been trying to trace for more years than i care to remember. I have found a few Callashaw's and some Callishaws from various places but none seem to tie up if i find them in one sourse i can't find them in another. I will list what i have and see if any one can point me in the right direction. National Burriel Index Hannah Callashaw yorkshire west riding 1877 1901 Census Mary Anne Callashaw A 19 Stepdaughter b Rochdale Patrick Callashaw a 12 stepson in law b Rochdale living with William Thompson 57 b Kilkenny Mary Thompson 45 b Sligo Irekand Lillian 8 b Rochdale Leonard 5 b Rochdale. Presumably Mary remarried and the Callashaw children are hers. Marriage Index ancestry Norah Callashw Oct 1988 Liverpool John Mcguigan Stephen Callashaw July 1993 Susan Clarke. Family search. Dwelling Ch Row Morton Derby David callishaw 29 Fireman B Kirkby Lincoln Elizabeth Callishaw 24 Newton Lincoln Dwelling Dale Villas Billton Cum Harrogate George Callishaw 57 Head GardenerMerrivale Warwick Thomas callishaw 33 Son Railway passr Guard b Normanton notts Emily Callishaw 22 Daughter B PAULL YORK I may as well tell the whole story while i'm about it ! My Gr Grand father was Charles Walton born (according to his marriage Certificate) c1875 His father was George Walton Foreman Stone Mason Mother Mary Calashaw. I can trace Charles up till 1922 in Hawick Scotland then he disapears. The Family story is that he was the Black sheep of a well to do Family and his father Kicked him out He supposedly changed his name but kept in touch with his mother I have no idea where he was born it just says England on the Census returns. My Gran thought they owned a quarry? and that they may have come from Bolton (but Which one there are several) He obviously told lies either to his children or on the marriage details!! Do you think I should Keep looking or is this a Mystery that will never be solved? |

Lesley, Yes, keep chipping away at it! All the 'family legends' in my lot have now been disproved - so don't necessarily believe they represent what actually happened ... so often these were sanitised verions of the truth for children. OK put it down for a while and ponder - then attack from another direction. Maybe you could try something different like WW1 soldiers records - if you think Charles was the right age. If you are lucky enough to find them at the National Archives, they may give you another clue ... and another and so on. This has worked for me very recently - in fact, so well that I found a long lost 1st cousin 1ce removed. On a gloomy note, you could try the commonwealth war graves commission website to see if he was a casualty in WW2. Good luck! Regs Jane |
