Gordon, Interesting recollection! The ALDRICH brush factory was the Roydon side of Diss - maybe this is the one you are recalling. If your little grey cells bring a stronger memory back, I'd be most interested. However, I think the enterprise that Crucknell SANDY might have been running would have been much smaller. I believe there were a number of brushmakers around the Diss area - all of whom probably suffered when mechanisation set in, a familiar story across most industries throughout the whole country at that time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Kind regards Jane

Jane, I seem to recall seeing something about a brush factory in one of the little villages just outside Diss - Roydon I think, though it may be Bressingham. Regards, Gordon.

Jenny, Crucknell SANDY was possibly already retired by 1881. He was living in Victoria Road, Diss with his wife Sarah Ann and his daughter Hannah. His odd name comes from him being the last child of Samuel SANDY and Lydia nee CRUCKNELL ... think they must have run out of first names by then! Any help on the directory front would be much appreciated. Kind regards Jane

Can anyone tell me if any trade directories exist for Diss, covering the late 1800s, please. I am trying to prove that Crucknell SANDY was running a brush making business at that time, which he sold during a market downturn and before 1888. It was possibly centred in Fair Green. Many thanks for any clues! Regs Jane
