Scottish deaths pre-1855?

Does anybody know if there is any way to look up Scottish deaths without going to Scotland? I am trying to find out when various of my Ferrier relatives died. Alexander Ferrier of Edinburgh, a tanner, husband of Mary Dods, must have died between 1827 (his youngest child born early 1828) and 1833 (when Mary remarried), but the only Alexander Ferrier of Edinburgh on the Scottish wills website in that period was a painter, so where else could I look? I would also like to find out which of Alexander and Mary's children died young (they had ten, but I think some of them must have died as babies or children) so I can stop trying to trace them forwards! Can anybody help? Kate.

Kate, I don't know if this site will be any help to you but might be worth a look. http://www.scotsfind.org/ Barbara

Barbara - Thanks for that. I've had a look, and the 'St. Cuthbert's Edinburgh Monumental Inscriptions' database on Scotsfind may well be what I'm looking for, but unfortunately when I click on it I get nothing. Still, it does say 'in progress' so maybe they just haven't put it up properly yet. Some of the other databases on there look as though they may well be helpful in other ways, not for deaths, and I have just downloaded the 'Roll of Edinburgh Burgesses' and am about to look through that for Ferriers. So thanks again. Kate.

Barbara - Actually that website is fantastic! I've looked through the Edinburgh burgesses, and my g-g-g-grandfather James Ferrier was a burgess (i.e. voter) of Edinburgh even though he had moved to London, and it even gives his father's name, and looking at his father it gives his father's name, so it's very helpful indeed! James is listed as 'shipmaster, London' so I know for sure it's him, so if anybody else wants pre-1855 information for Edinburgh, have a look at Scotsfind. Kate.

Kate, Glad it was so useful to you! I am not that far back yet but bookmarked it because I thought it might come in handy one day! Barbara
