Are there any BMD records online for 1920-1986?

From January 1984, all BMD's in England & Wales were computerised from the outset. Therefore there are no images or fiches available after that date, however the computerised records are available online. Advantages are that these records are complete and are fully searchable. They are also indexed monthly rather than quarterly. Ancestry has BMD's from 1984-2000 (1984-2002 for deaths), whilst 1837online has BMD's 1984-2002. By the way, just because these records are available in a computer database, don't assume that they are error-free!! The info has of course been transcribed from the original hand-written registers so there is still the potential for transcription errors. I found a marriage for the name LEECH in 1992, entered as LUCH! Richard

If you live in England/Wales, many large public libraries hold the GRO (BMD) index, usually through to about 2002, on fiche. I suggest that you check out your local libraries- a trip to London will probably not be necessary to view the index off-line. Also, access to the index will be free!

Thanks Nell, I have come across this one and it looks like it might be my only option. I don't know what year to look at so I might have to work back little by little. Ian

www*1837online*com [replace * with .] give a transcription of the GRO index pages for births, marriages and deaths. You can go to the page for each quarter that has the name you want, but if you are doing blanket searches it could be expensive, as there is no way you can type a name and get all the matches for the period. you have to search each quarter of each year. Ancestry has deaths from 1985 I think and you can pay £6 for 20 views I believe. nell

I am trying to trace more recent relatives, it is extremely frustrating that I have found records back to the 1700's online but have hit a big wall with regard to 1920-1986 records especially as I think that I have dicovered a branch of my family that we never knew existed. I don't mind if they are pay for view searches as I don't have any opportunity to visit the London record offices in person at the moment. Has anyone any ideas? Many thanks Ian
