You can find info and photos of the workhouse here: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Belfast/Belfast.shtml this site says: 'Wings were added at each end of the infirmary in 1900 to increase the hospital accommodation... Destitute pregnant women were catered for in the workhouse, first in a Ward 11 of the infirmary which was designated as a lying-in ward, and from 1892 in a 30-bed maternity block known as Ivy Cottage. Workhouses usually had an infirmary attached to them to care for inmates who were ill and also outside paupers who needed medical care. Babies, especially illegitimate ones, were often born in workhouse infirmaries (as in Oliver Twist). Many infirmaries were later turned into hospitals. I think your father-in-law was born in the infirmary part of the workhouse, which is why his birth was registered by the workhouse master. Nell |

Hi can anyone help does anyone know how i find out when the belfast union workhouse officially did not exhist and the belfast city hospital took over completely. The reason for this is that the name on my father in laws birth certificate is a James Mahood who was master of the belfast workhouse, the address is 51 lisburn rd and year is 1929. But i have been told it was a hospital then so that does not explain why James Mahood registered my father in laws birth. Can anyone help I am so confused. |
