How exciting. I have just ordered my very first certificate on-line from the GRO. I made very hard work of it (duh) considering I had all the necessary details, and when it got to the bit about a personal reference (number?) I was quite thrown - although it accepted my order without it. Can anyone tell me what was expected though? For NEXT time. I was very surprised by the fact that there appears to be no surcharge for overseas postage. Will be interested to see just how long it takes to arrive - especially in light of the recent backlogs - although they seem to be getting 'back to normalish'!! Victoria |

I think it is just for you to enter a reference that means something to you, if you wish - like a order no or anything you like to mind you. Probably aimed at professional researchers doing work for others. Anna x |

For the personal reference bit, I normally write the line of the family I am researching for that person - it's not necessary to fill this in though. |

I use it to know which it is of the sequence of orders I've sent. I prefix with GRO to distinguish from local ROs as well. Then, if there are any problems, I have my own cross-ref. I use the other ref, as well, to distinguish between certs for my half of the tree and certs for my husband's half -again sequenced, but also with B, M or D, as appropriate. You don't have to use any refs. It's more for businesses, I expect. Professional researchers would need to be able to work out whose money they were spending on each order. Christine |

B****y obvious once you know, isn't it?!! Thanks for that - it really threw me for a loop, but I can well understand that especially for professionals it would be very useful. Since this is the first one I've ordered (and I printed out the confirmation sheet) there shouldn't be a problem. Very late here for someone who needs to be up at 6am, so off to bed. Thanks all - Victoria |
