Can anyone find a birth record for Alfred Croft?

I'm trying to track down Alfred Croft, but the first record I can find is in the 1881 census when he was 13 and at Grove Park School in Wrexham Regis,Denbighshire. He was born in Crewe,Cheshire in about 1868 but I would like to find who his parents were so that I can work back in the family history. I then can't find him again until 1901 aged 33, married to Florence A.(maiden name Field) , a self-employed pharmacist. Any help in filling the gaps would be much appreciated.

That's certainly a possibility, although he was CROFT without an S. I see on that census that his mother is listed as a school matron---perhaps that's why he was at a boarding school at 13.

Florence Report 22 Aug 2012 16:04

His father James Croft was b Tipton staffs uk

His mother it had Manton Derbyshire

Flo,,,,,,,, i had a family in Crewe ,,,,and monks coppenhall and Nantwich appeared on every cert i got, ( probably just a mistake with the S.)

Flo edit ,,It looks like JAMES CROFT parents are John / Elizabeth CROFT Tipton staffs bricklayer. ( you still need certs to make sure)

Can i just say that the importance of a name ending in (S) and the accurate spelling/ recording was not a priority in times gone by, people would simply record it as they heard it

you will often find name variants such as Crofts and Croft also Cummings becoming Cummins or Cummin

Thanks everyone, that's a great help. Going back, it seems(loads of checking to be done) that his father was a furnace builder and that his grandparents were Jos.and Phoebey, Jos. being a labourer born about1778.

Hello Alison,

You maybe right,
but there are several that fits James b Tipton, i came across
John / Elizabeth when i followed through for James as the job changed to a bricklayer, but there is even a James / Hannah
who have a son James, thats why i said get certs before following.
