Island Report 22 Nov 2021 09:54

Brrrr..... white cars and roofs, peeped out at 5am and back under the duvet.

I haven't cut a cross in sprouts for years Annx and always steam them. I was bemused when a friend said (in recent years) that she always did them the 'correct way' ie with a cross. I didn't know there were rules :-0

Bright sunshine but I bet it's chilly and I have to go out. Big coat I think.

Morning Anng and all,

Bright sunshine again this morning but there was a frost last night before I went to bed. It was on my car roof and on the decking around oh's pond but it did'nt look like it was on the grass so an air frost maybe. This morning the windows in the bedroom are running with condensation so I have to clean those before I do anything else. Pc is saying 6 degrees and clear.

Must ring Mole Valley for chickens food too.

Hope you all slept well last night or at least got enough.

Morning AnnG and Everyone,

I was wakened by the neighbour opposite with his van at 7.00am plus the floodlight and his headlights lighting up our bedroom. He leaves the van running while he loads his tools and I started counting the times the van doors were slammed and it was 7 just from the time I started counting. At least he drives away gently.

OH is at the dentist now for a checkup and I have boiled eggs to go with our chicken and bacon pasta with salad for lunch. I have hoovered the conservatory, wiped the shelves in there and hoovered the kitchen. I showered then and can carry on with my painting now before this afternoon's course. The washer is going again as well and I have treated the limescale on the taps.

The sun is shining and it was chilly when I got up so the heating got a blast and it is cosy now.

I have managed to find some wide fit, short wellies on line so will order them later this afternoon. If we do get much snow, at least I will be prepared. It would hurt my knees to wrestle with full length wellies now.

OH's meeting at a school tomorrow has been cancelled due to the number of covid cases in the school now and will be a zoom meeting instead. We are both glad about that.

Good morning all quite a hard frost this morning although only, I think, on roofs and cars from what I can see. Sun is shining so it is soon going.

I only peel mushrooms if the skins are wrinkled and always cook the stalks. I think there is a lot of the flavour in the stalks.

Nothing planned today except this morning I have somebody from the hearing clinic coming to chat about fire alarms. (and the fact that I probably wouldn't hear them when I have my aids out at night.

Annx Report 21 Nov 2021 22:46

I've always cooked mushroom stalks as well. I only peel the caps if they are a bit dry, otherwise it's a wipe with a damp cloth. Island I remember doing the sprouts as well. Did you have to cut the little cross at the base of the stalks? I read a few years ago that it makes no difference to how quick they cook and don't bother anymore.

Lovely autumn photos Mel. The leaves have been slow falling this year.

We got a few subs again and 5 things were out of stock and the delivery driver just dumped their racks without bagging up the groceries in our bags so I shall feed that back as it is requested they do it on the order. I still didn't get a small square baking tin, so will order one elsewhere now.

Early start tomorrow as OH has a dentist appointment. I wonder what they will have to say about tooth the hospital said 2 years ago that they should fill or extract and have been passing one to the other since.

Annx, you've reminded me of 'helping' mother with veg preparing.
As children little brother and I had the job of shelling the peas - yum yum - there was always a quizzical look on mothers face when we handed them over LOL

As an independent adult I'd offer to help with the dinner sometimes. I took off too many of the outer leaves on the sprouts I was told :-S Hmm... dark green bitter leaves and boiled to death. Mushrooms on the other hand...... I was wrong again because I didn't peel them or remove the stalks. I don't know what happened to previous or later stalks but those ones sat in a dish on the kitchen window sill for the rest of my visit so undoubtedly went in the bin. How did I manage to feed myself!

Mel, I'm having a day off :-D

Afternoon All,

It's 7 degrees here too and quite sunny, but we put a blast of heat on to take the chill off.

That's good the family are all nearly out of quarantine Mandy. Things will soon get back in the old routine for them again. It's good they haven't been very ill with the virus. Do the children have school dinners? I was thinking when you said about getting a sack of potatoes how many would need peeling for them, but I expect the children help with some things just like we did. I remember shelling peas and broad beans and slicing the runners. Mum always said I wasted too much potato when I peeled them so I didn't have that to do very often.Making the custard was always my job too as well as doing a trifle when we had one.

We have the food drop this afternoon so it will be good to get that wiped and all put away. Apart from Mince Pies and the veg I think we have all the food for Christmas now.

OH has the dentist early tomorrow, but we want to get to the factory shop for opening time again Tuesday morning as the joggers OH got from there fit him perfectly and he wants to get some more before they sell out of them. They were only £12. Clothing, like everything else, seems to have shot up in price so it's good to find some bargains. The Regatta Outlet shop online is good for coats, fleeces etc.

Yes I hope Frank and Gill are doing ok and that Gill will have news of her building work soon.

I managed a short walk this morning and got back just as it started raining. The sun’s out again now and the wind has dropped but it’s only 7 degrees. I’ve got a brisket of beef in a pot roast with carrots and leeks and have just put potatoes and parsnips in to roast as well. Broccoli is ready in the steamer and only needs switching on so nothing more to do till dishing up. Time for a nice glass of Pinot Grigio I think. Cheers :-D

Good morning all I slept very well last night didn't get up at all and woke at 7.40. Made myself a cheese omelette for latish breakfast. Tesco delivery due 11-12 but last week it was before 10.30. So who knows.
It is 5 degrees here and bright, some sun, I would rather have this that 12 degrees and misty dull.

Not sure what else to do, may go for a walk or may do some HW. kitchen floor could do with cleaning. I will see where the mood takes me.

Good morning all

It’s bright and sunny at the moment but brrr, it’s cold. It’s only 4 degrees and not supposed to get higher than 7 all day. Winter’s on the way.

I haven’t any plans for the day. I ought to try and go for a walk as I’m a bit lacking in exercise lately but the idea isn’t very appealing. I’ll see what I feel like later.

By my reckoning Mandy that's 55 quid to treat yourself with LOL

I was told those 'eye sprinkles' as I call them are 'ocular migraines' and nothing to worry about. They were a bit annoyed at the eye clinic as my gp had sent me there as 'urgent' - how was I to know? - they said he should know the difference between an ocular migraine and a detaching retina. Having had the latter since, I certainly know the difference now.
I haven't had an oc. mig. for a while, they are annoying but as Ann says, they only last about 20 mins, so as I've read online - sit back and enjoy the light show :-D Not nice if you have a headache too though.

I put the light on at 3pm :-0

Its good your zig zaggy lines have now gone Mandy and you had a good buy up whilst out and a nice lot of presents for all the family. I don't know what to buy oh this Christmas as he has nearly everything he needs apart from a new wife!

Book tokens are really good for children as they can pick just the book they want and as you say it saves on postage.

We have had the sun out since 1.30pm but its just clouded over again now but it was a welcome sight while it lasted.
