Have a clipping in regards to ALBERT WILLIAM WOODLAND. When A.W.Woodland, the former Derbyshire County amatuer, decided to migrate to South Wales it was a rare slice of good luck Rhonnda cricket and his avent in the Treorchy Club seems to have had a stimulating effect all round on the game in the district. His prowess with both bat and ball and his profound knowledge of cricket in all its phases is just the factor that the welfare of the game desires to help it achieve the popularity football already possesses in the hearts of the valley miners. Although his fast bowling sometimes strikes terror into the hearts of visiting batsmen (the equal of his pace has not been previously seen in local cricket) they profit from the fact that if they aspire to high class honours they will already have sampled " express stuff". It was fitting that Woodland should find his best form in the Upper Rhonndas principal game of the season, for versus the Glamorgan County side a record crowd saw him take seven good wickets for 42 runs (six clean bowled) and later compile an exhilarating 45 not out with the same delightful all-round-wricket play in helping Treorchy to amass 112 for two wickets to win very comfortably. I believe this to be dated 1890-1930 if anyone can shorten the odds let me know!!!! |
