Selina (b Oswaldtwistle/Church, Lancs) and her daughter Mary Jane (b Accrington, Lancs) seem to disappear after the 1881 Census when they were lodging with the Lonsdale family in Accrington. Selina was unmarried at the time. Any anwers please?

Also, I have got back as far as Selina's grandfather in the Woodhead family tree. He was Thomas Woodhead and he married Ellen (Nelly) Whalley at the Parish Church of St James, Church Kirk, Lancashire on 12th March 1811. However I have not been able to find where or when they were born. Any clues please?

Thank you in anticipation.

That's the one Mike. It's the Thomas who got married 1811 where I hit
the wall. I can't find where or when he and his wife were born, also their parents.

Ann

Ann Report 20 Jan 2011 19:07

I thought that, Mel. Is there any way I can find out?

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 20 Jan 2011 19:20

Well the only thing I can say is it would have been after the 1881 census but then we don't know where she marries??

Mike * Report 20 Jan 2011 19:21

Pity his marriage doesn't give his age.
You need to know roughly when he was born.
Does he appear on any census ?

Thank you Mel. I'm quite new to this and little confused. Are you saying 2 Selina Woodheads married a Henry Jones and a John Bryan Clark in Sheffield in 1883? Sorry if I'm being a bit thick.

If you go to freebmd you can check out the other partners by clicking on the page number at the end of the entry.

If there are 2 couples or more married that day they will all appear under the same number.
The example that Mel found shows that there were 2 brides and 2 grooms.
Selina could have married Jones or Clark.

Ann Report 20 Jan 2011 20:35

Thank you. I shall search along that path. I didn't know about clicking the page number on freebmd. I've been looking for Selina and Mary Jane for weeks! Thanks again for the tip.

Selina WOODHEAD & Margaret Dooley (nee WOODHEAD) found?

I have looked at the above tips but found no good match. I think I may have found Selina, seemingly travelling alone, on the British Princess arriving in Philadelphia 4th May 1884. I found the death of a Mary Jane Woodhead (Selina's daughter?) aged 2 in Fylde late 1881. The two of them may have gone there after the 1881 census as they were only lodging with the Lonsdale family in Accrington when the census was recorded. Selina was unmarried.
Also, Selina's sister Margaret and her husband John Dooley were possibly on the Caledonia arriving in New York 22nd August 1881. The ages and dates fit with their disappearance, but Margaret is recorded on the ship's list as being Irish. The ship did call in Ireland before crossing the Atlantic - do you think this could be a mistake? I have found no way of proving they are my family - they all immediately disappear again. I can find no trace of them or Selina on the other side of 'The Pond.' Any ideas please?

Ann Report 9 Mar 2011 22:43

Does anyone please know a good source for finding people once they have crossed the Atlantic to the U.S.A. I have spent many hours looking online for the above but have drawn a blank.
Selina Woodhead completely disappears and although there are other Margaret Dooleys they are recorded as coming from Ireland. Also is there a good online source for passport applications, immigration papers etc - I have looked on Ancestry, National Archives and various American sites. I've also looked at marriages for Selina but again have drawn a blank? All I have are their names on passenger lists for the voyages mentioned in previous mail. Thank you in anticipation.
