Hi, I am trying to find any information about the Wixon family history, particularly those living around the Portsmouth/ Hampshire area, although I suspect there may be a link with those in the Portsmouth area to other areas, especially Bristol. My wife's maiden name was wixon and we do know that her grandfather was alfred burton wixon born in Portsmouth in 1921. He was married to Florence Elliot and they had 4 children including my father in law. I also know that Alfred wixon's Mothers maiden name was "Foster", however, whether this was Florence Foster who married Harry E wixon in 1921 or Janet Foster who married William Henry Wixon in 1926 I am unsure, I would guess at the former because Florence and Harry got married before Alfred was born. I suspect that Florence Foster and Janet Foster may well have been sisters, although have no evidence of this. I also suspect William Henry Wixon and Harry E Wixon were brothers, both born on the Isle Of Wight. William Henry was born in 1897 and Harry E in 1901. Also born on the Isle Of Wight were Lucy Beatrice Wixon in 1896 and Annie A Wixon in 1899 and I suspect these were sisters to William Henry and Harry E Wixon, mainly due to the fact that up until this time there was only one other Wixon on the Isle Of Wight, this being William H Wixon who was born around 1874 (not on the Isle Of Wight) and probable father to Lucy Beatrice, William Henry, Annie A and Harry E Wixon. However I will come back to William H Wixon again shortly. After Harry E Wixon was born in 1901 there was no further trace of any Wixons on the Isle Of Wight, However there were a further 2 births of Wixons, Alfred A Wixon in 1904 and Gladys Frances Wixon in 1906, both born in Portsmouth where there were no previous records of Wixons, leading me to believe that the whole family of William H Wixon had moved from the Isle Of Wight to Portsmouth shortly after Harry E's birth in 1901 where the next 2 siblings to the Wixon family, Gladys Frances and Alfred A were born. To further strengthen this move of the whole family from the Isle Of Wight to Portsmouth was the fact that William Henry and Harry E Wixon both got married in Portsmouth, and records also show that Annie A Wixon and Lucy B Wixon also got married in Portsmouth. I have as yet found no trace though of Alfred A Wixon getting married.
Apart from Alfred Burton Wixon, there were 3 other Wixons born in Portsmouth in this next generation, 2 with mothers having the maiden name of Foster, Doris M Wixon born in Portsmouth in 1926 and Rita Wixon, born in Gosport Nr Portsmouth in 1939, but whether the mother was Janet or Florence I have no idea, so at this time, although I know that Doris and Rita were related to Alfred, I have no idea as to whether they were sisters or cousins to him. Pearl P Wixon was also born in Portsmouth in 1923, and again, I guess either a sibling or cousin to Alfred, but her mothers maiden name was "Smart" which has thrown me into complete chaos as I can as yet find no records of a "Wixon" marrying a "Smart" during the years prior to or just after Pearl's birth. However, reference has been made in the past by my father in law (who we have no contact with at this time) to an Auntie Pearl, so I again would guess that Pearl P Wixon born in Portsmouth in 1923 is Auntie Pearl. As I sit here writing this I wonder if Alfred A Wixon married a "Smart" and had a daughter called Pearl. This could explain the elusive maiden name of "Smart", the "Auntie Pearl" although she would really have been a great Auntie, and maybe if there was a spelling error or similar in one of the names why I cannot find a Marraige record for either "Smart to Wixon" or "Alfred A Wixon".
Coming back to William H Wixon, in the 1891 Census William was shown Living as a Boarder at Newport on the Isle of Wight. He was 17 at the time and no other Wixon's were in the houshold or indeed on the Isle Of Wight. He was at the time an apprentice carpenter who was born (if I have read it right, and it is not easy to read) in Huntingdon. I cannot confirm this by birth records because according to these, the only William Wixon born around 1874 was born in St Ives and unfortunately the 1901 census shows no record of any Wixons either on the Isle Of Wight or Portsmouth, strengthening further still my thoughts of a move to Portsmouth shortly after Harry's birth in 1901, maybe for some reason missing the entry in this census. However, if William H was born in Huntingdon, than this may also strengthen my father in law's thought that his family originally originated from the Bristol area.
Any thoughts or information on any of this would be very gratefully received as information is thin on the ground, especially as talking to family to find any of this out is not an option. The one thing in my favour is that Wixon is not a common name, and it would most certainly appear that ALL the Wixon's in the Portsmouth/ Isle Of Wight area are related.
Thank you
