Looks like he and Sarah were living together before they married.

His marriage cert to Sarah should state that he was a widower, if he had been married before.

If Sarah was married to George Dobbs before William she should have married in the name Sarah Dobbs.

How do you know she was married before?

Edit.

Found this marriage.

marital status on marriage certs can be "ahem" incorrect it depends on what the couple told the vicar or registrar

my great grandparents are listed as batchelor and spinster on their cert despite the fact he was a widower and she was either a bigamist or widow (or wasn't married to the man who had previously fathered her 4 children)

Something is just not adding up.

Have you got a copy of your mothers birth certificate? Is there an address where she was born on it and who registered the birth?

ChristineinPortugal

Was she registered as Dobbs?

no i afraid its the original wrote on the back in pencil
mother Sarah -- father William

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 11 Sep 2010 18:14

Hi Marilyn,

If your mother was registered as a Wright then obviously William accepted that he was the father even though at the time he and the child's mother (Sarah) were not married in the eyes of the law.

Nothing unusual in that as divorce was only an option for the rich many couples whose original marriages had floundered simply moved on to new partners. Although Sarah's original husband died in 1911 it looks like that Sarah and William simply delayed getting married until 1914.
