I am trying to find Luke Weeden born 1816 Hillingdon-son of James and Pheobe nee Owen. I have found him on the census 1851 married to a lady called Mary Andrews maiden name Lyons who came from Ratcliff Stepney. There is a grandson ? James West age 4 from Finsbury and cant find the link. Can anyone be kind enough to help. Thanks

Have you found info about Mary Lyons Andrews -- her children, and could James West be her grandson, son of a child of hers rather than Luke Weedon's?

the marriage to place it in time for searching

Marriages Mar 1861 (>99%)
Andrews Mary Mile End 1c 776
Weeden Luke Mile End 1c 776

oh oops, you say they were together in 1851?

Thanks, but I havent got anything other than knowing that Luke was with her on the 1851 census. On the marriage cert is says she is a widow and her father was John Lyons. I cant find them after th 1851 so would be grateful for any further help.Thank you.

The death looks as though is the right Luke as age would tie up with the census age back to 1851. Can anyone tell me if Luke and Mary had children. Thanks

1851 in Stepney

Luke Weeden 36 born Uxbridge
Mary Weeden 39 born Ratcliff
Elizabeth Wobs 69
Joseph Harris 45
James West 4

No children at that point, and Mary is in her late 30s.

The order the names are in on the census page, as above, makes it difficult to tell even whether James West is nominally a grandchild of the head of household. He could be a grandchild of one of the lodgers.

I wonder if James West is a grandchild of one of the lodgers? He's listed after the lodgers.

I couldnt tell either. Can anyone see Marys death index. Thanks

Great minds, Margaret ;)

They were in Stepney in 1851 and he died in Stepney in 1868. So one might expect any children to be born in Stepney. Did you try looking for births at FreeBMD?

There are six 1851-1861 (to be unrealistically overinclusive)

You might identify them at FreeBMD and then search for them in 1861.

... What the heck

Births Mar 1851 (>99%)
Weeden Jane Stepney 2 571

Births Mar 1853 (>99%)
Weeden Amelia Stepney 1c 571

Births Dec 1853 (>99%)
WEEDEN Louis Stepney 1c 491

Births Mar 1855 (>99%)
Weeden William Stepney 1c 370

Births Dec 1859 (>99%)
WEEDEN Henry Stepney 1c 516

Births Jun 1861 (>99%)
WEEDEN Anne Maria Stepney 1c 508

I was looking at the original of the marriage certificate and it definitely states 1861. Also Mary Andrews father's name is John Lyons. It's got to be yours!

Lianne

Lianne Report 4 Jan 2010 20:19

The 1861 marriage is right but cant find after but probably has something to do with the fact he appears to died 1868. I wonder if she had any children from 1st marriage that may have descendants.

Lianne Report 4 Jan 2010 20:30

Thanks all but have got the details of the 1861 marriage. I still cant find on the 1841 or 1861 census.

Lianne

Lianne Report 4 Jan 2010 21:11

Thanks for all those that have looked but please can anyone find him where I was asking for 1841 census and 1861 census. Thanks

There you go Stephen, and I thought I had looked at every &%$ Luke in 1861. (Oh right, of course, Lake Werdon, so neither Luke nameless nor nameless Wee* would have got me anywhere. He's reminding me of Mr Lemon Balls, known to his family as Simon ...)

Did you imagine that we were not _trying_ to find what you had asked for? You couldn't, so it's not surprising that sevral other people combined couldn't either, we weren't really all sitting here counting our fingers and posting randomly.

JAE4 did, though, congrats!

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 4 Jan 2010 21:59

Well done, JAE4!!!
Still can't understand though why the couple were together on the 51 census when they didn't marry till 61.

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 4 Jan 2010 22:22

Shh, Margaret, you're not supposed to ask!

Presumably one or both of them wasn't free to marry. I have always assumed that that was the case for my great-grandparents who were together from their early 20s before 1851 and didn't marry until a decade after the last of their kids was born!

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 4 Jan 2010 22:28

Stephen for a grandchild of Mary or Luke to be named West, one of them needed to have a daughter who had a child with a man named West, or a son who had a child with a woman named West.

Did you look for marriages like that at FreeBMD? The spouses weren't necessarily married, of course, but it's one possibility.

Nothing 1841-1851 for Weedon-West but there are these

Type: Marriages Surname: andrews Start date: Mar 1841
End date: Dec 1851 Spouse/Mother's surname: west County: Middlesex

Marriages Sep 1843 (>99%)
ANDREWS Elizabeth Stepney 2 385 + James West

Marriages Sep 1846 (>99%)
Andrews Sarah Stepney 2 472 + Edward West

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 4 Jan 2010 22:35

They lost some years from 51 to 61, didn't they??

36 and 39 in 1851, 44 and 42 in 1861. Mary especially seems to have found the fountain of youth.

Even if Mary was 49 in 1861, she was barely old enough to have a 13-yr-old grandson - a mother at 18 with a daughter who was a mother at 18. So either of those marriages is perhaps unlikely.

But then given the age diff she might have been fibbing from the time they met.

The only other female Andrews + West marriage in Middlesex was Ellen, 1851, Marylebone.

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 4 Jan 2010 22:46

and then of course there's the easy way

Name: James West
Age: 4 (aged 13 in 1861)
Estimated birth year: abt 1847
Relation: Grandchild
Gender: Male
Where born: Finsbury, Middlesex, England

Births Dec 1847
WEST James Edmund St Lukes 2 256

St Lukes is the reg dist for Finsbury at the time, and that's the only James West there and then.
