Find Ancestors

I've been desperately trying to search for the marriage certificate of Ellen Wood (c1883) to Thomas Wagstaff (c1887). Used the freebmd and can't seem to find them, am also at a loss on family search. Not sure what to do next. They either got married in Manchester or in Wakefield in Yorkshire.

The 1911 census says they've been married for 'under one year' so I guess they got married 1910 or 1911.

Can anyone help?

I see Ellen is listed as Helen in 1911 but I have tried every version I can think of and found no marriage record. They may have never married.

I'm thinking the same thing. Thanks for searching anyway. :D

Did they stay in Wakefield, and have you looked for a marriage several years later?

@tempest - I saw that entry, but the other names written on the page don't match up with Ellen Wood. Wouldn't his spouse's name be on the same page?

@patchem, they stayed in Leeds after 1911. Sorry, I meant to say Woodhouse in Leeds, Yorkshire not Wakefield. At the time of the 1911 census they were staying at 6 Denmark Street, Leeds and then by 1920 they had moved to 6 Benno Square, Leeds.

I also tried all possible years they could have married to no avail.

Ellen should be on the same page, there are five names on the page, maybe an error or Ellen has been missed off in transcription

just wondering whether Ellen was her middle name as both Mary and Annie have the middle initial E.

I may be clutching at straws but could Ellen have been married previously and therefore not married as Wood?

Thanks for that tempest. There's a possibility she might have been married before. There has always been a rumor in the family about this but since she has always put on the birth certificate of her children that she was formerly Wood I always dismissed it thinking she would have put her last married name on there.

Hello Kristen, she should have put her maiden name on children's births - not her last married name. But, not everyone followed the "rules"!

ok, for a while there it looked very promising.

When was the first child born and what was his/her name? Did she given Ellen as her first name on the birth cert? Do you know when and where she died?

Yes I do. The first child (Alexander) was born 3rd July 1911 at 6 Denmark Street, Leeds. Ellen was the informant and her name is written as Ellen Wagstaff formerly Wood. Thomas's name is written as Tom Wagstaff under father.

The second child was born 18th January 1920 at 6 Benno Square, Leeds. Her name was Dorothy Mary. Again, the details of Ellen are the same yet father is written as Thomas not Tom.

Ellen died at 85 years old on 6th January 1968 at St James's Hospital, Leeds. Her usual address was 44 Haslewood Drive, Leeds. Her name is written as Ellen Wagstaff.
