Find Ancestors

I'm looking for anyone with "ANY" information on the St Anthony's women's home in Croydon NSW near Sydney Australia.

My mother gave birth to a baby boy in 1973 when she was very young, but was told he died during the birth. she was made sign numerous amounts of papers and was never shown her child, though she caught a quick glimpse of him as a nurse took him away and can swear till this day she heard him crying.

This haunts my Mother everyday, and just wants closure if he sadly did pass, we arent looking to disrupt his life we just need to know the truth.

If the child lived even for a few hours a certificate would have been issued.
In England it would be under the mother's surname & male/female so I assume it is the same in Aus.
Perhaps both indexes could be checked ?

Terrible times, I can understand the doubts cos they may have decided she would "move on " if she was told the child "never existed"

Problem is, in both cases paperwork would have been signed.

Yes It's very sad, i just have no idea where to even start, unfortuanatly back then it happened to soo many young women and now they are in my mothers shoes.
I Appreciate the support guys and the help so far!

Hi Erin, From the NSW BDM register there is no death registration for your mothers name in 1973.

No unamed in either 72/73/74.

While it was illegal in 1974 to take children from their mothers under 18yoa without a consent from an adult she may have unknowingly signed consents.

From the information I have I can go no further.

If the child survived, would the child be FIRST registered under the birth mother's surname & then re-registered under the new adopted name ?

Surely the "home" would not legally bypass the paperwork & just register under the new parents name ?

Perhaps a look under the birth indexes for Erin's mum's surname ?

She must get peace of mind.

The baby would be under her last name of Fairall at the time and renamed later, and they forced her to sign papers they wouldnt let her read.

when open go to adoptions that will give you everything you would need to get started it has all the adresses that you will need

Do AUS have like UK does, a combined medical notes ( the ones passed from general practitioner to GP ) that you are allowed to view ?
.
So if there was a live birth it would show on these records / files.

It would be recorded as any mother needs the 6 weeks medical check-up whatever the circumstances.

Hi Guys Sorry i havent had access to the computer.

I Have good news! i rang DOCs and they put us on the right track!! we are in the next couple of days going to be contacting the Births Deaths And Marriages for information on the death records or Adoption Papers!

We Will Soon Know Once and for All!

Hi Guys Ive Only Just Gotten Near A Computer! Well we are issueing for a Authority to tell us everything, if he has passed it will give us everything we need to know! such a a burial place and what he died from! if he is alive there will be all his records! Very Excited either way, its going to be good to finally have closure after all this time!
