Hi
I have hit the proverbial "brickwall" ! My Grt Grandmother Emma Turner married Charles Chalmers on Jan 12th 1886 in Portsmouth. According to the cert she was a spinster and her father's name was George and his occupation was a tailor. On my Grandmother's birth cert, Emma Turner came from London so I trawled thru the 1851 census trying to find an Emma whose father was George.. no luck ! I cannot find any record of her until 1891 when she turns up with her husband Charles Chalmers and her daughter Lily (my Grandmother) plus her other daughter Florence (where did she come from !!). Did Emma lie on her marriage cert, was she previously married, where is she from 1851 to 1881 ?? If there is anyone out there who can solve the mystery of "my Emma" I would be really grateful as this is a branch of the tree which as me stumped.

Have you the birth cert for Lily as this will give her mothers maiden name?

Hi Vivienne. You will have to get a couple of certificates to prove the following, but on 1891 census there are two children shown. Florence and Lily, but on the 1901 census there are three. Florence, Jane and Lily.
I feel sure that emma was either married previously or had two children prior to her marriage to Charles.
They married 1886. Jan/March Qtr. reg in Portsmouth. vol 2b 601.
Lily, I feel sure was theirs.
I can find the birth of a Florence Turner. 1877 Oct/Dec Qtr. reg in Portsmouth. vol 2b 478. The birth certificate should show her parents. If you quote Mother as Emma. If correct you should get the Father if Emma was previously married. I presume Jane also from the same union, but have not found her birth index yet.
The fact that they were listed as Chalmers on the two census records does not mean a lot. My Gt Grandparents children were all listed under Fathers name, but registered under Mothers, as they were not married. I hope this helps. If you get the Father of Florence then a further search can be made to find them on the 1881 census etc., Ethel.

I am already in the process of obtaining the birth cert of Florence as fortunately I have just relocated to Portsmouth and the register offcee is a mere 10 min walk away ! I am now starting to think that "my Emma" was not a spinster as recorded on her marriage cert. Were they allowed to tell "porkies" in 1886 ? !

I may have located Emma and Florence 1881 in Portsea married no husband present Emma Wood 35y London Florence Wood 4y Portsea
Florence Wood birth June Q 1877 Portsea 2b 408
a copy of this would give fathers name if one if he is named then can look for marriage and death or was she abandoned and remarry any way but at least you would know maiden name!!!

Hi Viv. They put alsorts of wrong info down back then. some deliberatly, some through poor education. I am sure of the marriage so Florence and Jane must be before that. It will be interesting to find out what the birth certificate shows when you get it. Ethel.

Hellooo To All
Thanks so much for all the input to "my Emma" Turner/Chalmers query. I have received so much feedback that it is going to take me a while to sort it all out in my head. You can probably understand why this particullar "brickwall" has been difficult for me..... so many leads to follow. I am off on holiday to Italy early next week and I will completely clear my mind of Emma until I return to try and smash that brickwall
Thanks
Viv
