Hello fellow researchers, I am trying to find the father of George Tompkin and Luke James Tompkin[brothers] on the 1841 census they are listed with mother Mary, living in London, do not know Mary's maiden name, but think she also had a daughter Editha. |

Hello Vivienne, have you identified their marriages? If you get a copy of one of their marriage certificates it will tell you the father's name they reported when they married if they did name a father. |

This seems to be the marriage for the couple Ann of Green Gables posted and the birthplace Hendon in that 1881 census seems to match |

Thank you to all for the info posted, Luke James Tompkin was my Gt.Gt.Grandfather the father of Albert Tompkin. As you can see he is listed with his Mother Mary & brother George on 1841 census. Where I got Editha from, she is listed on one census in the same household as Luke as sister [Editha Collishaw] her husband John Collishaw was deceased by then. Editha from what I can gather was born around 1816, then George 1828 and Luke 1830. The Luke James who married in 1884 was the son of Luke James Snr. Luke senior first married Margaret Ann Chalmers in 1848, she died in the 1870s he re-married in 1879 Clare E Clegg and he died in 1873. This is as far as I have got on the Tompkin side but if there is anyone who can tell me who Mary's Husband was I will be eternally grateful. |

Vivienne you want to know 'who Mary's Husband was'. The very simple way to find out is to obtain a marriage certificate for one of the sons or have you done that and they did not name a father? (That was the very first tihng I said in my first post but I don't see your answer) |

Sorry if I upset someone by not getting Luke James Tompkin's marriage cert copy sooner , but as a pensioner, at times other things have to take priority. |

Ginny was kidding you I think Vivienne. Everyone is very pleased when somebody comes back to their thread and reports on progress. Look how late I am coming back to the thread, lol. |

Just got back from holiday and am pleased to see that I still have some contacts to help out. I only started this research last year and a lot of my family knowledge was from what my grandmother told me, now I am like a lot of others trying to fill in the gaps. I did get Luke James's fathers name George Tompkin and his occupation, Carpenter. I cannot find the marriage of George and Mary, but then it was before 1837, so would have to find it in church records. These I think may be in Leicester as that is where Mary came from. My brother lives near Leicester, he too is retired, and is going to try the churches which were around in 1820's. Anyhow thanks for all your help Ginny and Brucebat from a grateful 74yr old. |
