Julie Report 12 Apr 2010 14:00

Hi everyone,
I have just received my great grandmothers birth cert, and wanted a bit more info on her parents please.
I have found their marriage in 1879 in Whitehaven Cumbria.
My great grandmother was Ada Thwaites born 1884,Whitehaven.
Her parents where William Thwaites and Ann formerly Litster.
Their address on the certificate looks like Trumpet Terrace her fathers occupation at the time was an engine driver.
Any help would be much appriciated

Thanks in advance

Julie

Thank you so much Somerset Girl I had no idea if she had any siblings whatsoever.
All I knew was she seemed to be in Cumbria from birth until she married my great grandfather in 1906 in Bickerstaffe Lancashire.
Do you think the enumerater mis-heard Annie and wrote Hannah,it seems to happen quite often with my families.
It must be the accents

Thanks again Julie

Thanks again SomersetGirl

I dont know how you find the info so quickly.

I noticed William was an Iron ore miner in 1891,so theres a possibility they moved to Lancashire after 1901 as there where mines around the area at that time.

Thanks once again

Hi SomersetGirl
I know Ada was married by 1911,and was living in Bickerstaffe in Lancashire with 3 young boys one of which was my grandad.
She married Robert Rigby in 1906 at Holy Trinity in Bickerstaffe.

I know there first child was also a Norman,so she may have named him after her baby brother.

Thank you so much

Do you think Ann Adas mother could've died because Hannah looks consistant for the next three census' ?

Could William have re-married because he had at least three children to bring up ?

I can't find a death for an Ann Thwaites though.

Nothing is ever straight forward with families, maybe thats why I find it fascinating.

Thanks again

Julie

In the 1911 census they are listed as married 20 years and with only 5 children so it is possible that Hannah is a different person to the original Ann. However the birth years are the same and Ann/Hannah can be interchangable.

There is this marriage from FreeBMD that could be the couple and a possible earlier death of Ann the same year. There is also a possible Annie Tedcastle in earlier census years listed as Annie - in 1871 in the workhouse(Harraby Hill Workhouse School) with possible sister Mary Jane Tedcastle age 13 also born in Carlisle

Thanks K,

It looks like a definate possibility,William would;ve married again within twelve months.

This seems to be a theme in a few of my relatives over the generations.

Theres always something that makes you want to carry on digging.

Thanks everyone for your help,my Dad was fascinated reading it all yesterday and is thinking about going to the Cumbrian records office.

I was just wondering if Ada would be in domestic service in 1901,I think she was still in Cleator though.

Thanks again

Thank you K its very much appreciated, she could possibly be a relative.

She could be Elizabeth Litster her mothers sister,I'll have to have a nosey on freebmd.

Thanks again

Julie

Julie Report 16 Apr 2010 20:37

Well I had a nosey and it looks like its Betsy Thwaite that married Mr Haddath in 1868 so a possible relative.

Thwaites and slight varients seems to be a common name around the Cumbrian area,as to is Rigby in Lancashire who Ada married.

Thanks again everyone

Quote from Carlisle Record Office website:
Carlisle Record Office will be closing its doors for the final time on Thursday 29 April 2010 (currently open Monday-Thursdays). This is to enable staff and volunteers to focus on the essential work behind the scenes preparing for the removal of millions of unique historic documents from four separate buildings in Carlisle into their new home at Petteril Bank in south Carlisle. The Carlisle Record Office will start to move to these new purpose-built premises this spring and will reopen in January 2011.
Hope this helps.

Eringobragh1916 Report 18 Apr 2010 09:54

Julie....1881 Census shows next door neighbours of Wm and Ann are Joseph Heddath and Betsy also Neice Mary Thwaites aged 7....
Not uncommon for husband to have been in Africa (1901) probably should be South Africa...Many men from 'The Moor' went out to work in the mines there...

Thank you Erin and K once again,

My Dad has been reading through it all today, and found it to be really interesting.

Looking back at Joseph Heddath he says he was born in Lancashire so there could be a possibility he had something to do with Ada being there.

Thanks again you have been fantastic
