Hi, I have a query which I hope someone can help with, the individual I am looking for is Harriet Lumb Shaw 1861 (who was married to Levi Wheelwright) whose mother was Sarah Shaw, now according to census info her father is Alexander Wadsworth, but is not mentioned as being Sarah Shaw’s husband.

I have just today received the marriage cert of Harriet Lumbshaw and Levi Wheelwright and Harriet’s father is not on the cert. I have ordered her birth cert which should be with me next week. I was just wondering why the fathers name is not listed???

what makes you think the census says he is her father??

Sylvia, one of the earlier census has him in the same household as "servant". I suspect he may have been a little more than a servant, pmsl.

Servant in mor senses of the word then???


Interesting in that on both those censuses she claims to be Married and Head of Household

He's still there in 1871 as a Boarder .... but i hope the young kiddies really aren't hers!!

Well on the 1881 census the mother is down as a widower, and I have sometimes seen the children referred to as 'lumb wadsworth' I have almost come to the conclusion that he is there father but I will wait for the birth certificate. I just wondered why it wasn’t on the marriage cert.

I saw on the 1881 census that John Henry (1866) and Sarah Ann(1871) are grandchildren, which of the lumb shaw sisters is there mother i dont rightly know yet. (and who has a clue who the father is because they are also down as lumb shaw)

May I say that you might be disappointed when you get the birth certificate.


Unless she really was married before and therefore couldn't marry Alexander, then it probably will not say on the certificate whether or not he is the father.


It is suspicious that he is the father, the problem will be proving it!



and I suspect the 2 young ones in 1871 are actually the children of one of Sarah's older daughters.

You're probably correct, but the problem will be in finding the truth, or in proving that he is.



Just hope he isn't also the father of the younger children!!!

I note that someone has added to the children's name son ancestry on the 1881 that they could also be known as Wadsworth.
