No, you dont need to get that cert! - they just happened to be on the same page of the index that your lot were on. When we do look ups on marriages we normally give everyone on that page because otherwise you could mislead someone - particularly if the wifes surname is unknown and the two or three brides shown have the same first name - they arent shown in couples,on the freebmd, but in alphabetical order so its a habit.

However, you know your couple on there, Thats the one to order. You will see I have pointed to your couple in the list of people. Sometimes people dont know the surname of the wife and so we just point out the likely one due to the first name matching a census record or something.

You just need to buy the Portch/Wilson cert that is shown on that page. In fact you only need to use the name of either the bride or groom on a marriage certificate - you dont need both. So if you find someone on a freebmd marriage who is definitely yours but you dont know the other persons name just order with the one name you are sure of.

Hi,
Why did you add the McCormick and Waller marriages for certificates I need to get?

Sue

Just Friday evening? Whole weekend Id have thought! Get those certs ordered. And dont order them from anywhere except that site I gave you - some scam sites charge up to £50 for a £7 cert.

Now of course we know how I am going to spend my Friday evening......

Yes, Fanny is with Lillie in that 1901 census. I cant see a Rebecca with William though. It didnt help that you had a wrong spelling for Lillies surname.

Get some of those certs and you will be able to place them exactly.

Lillies parents married when he was in the army - they may be an interesting line.

You should now be able to follow some of the info on the ancestry site.

Oh wow.....now we have it. Doris was the only daughter of William and Lillie. Its William that had a sister called Rebecca and Lillie had a sister called Fanny. You have the right Lillie now. I will order Certificates - thanks for the website. I do subscribe to Ancestory.com and Genes reunited. Being new to this I have found it difficult to 'dig' but thanks - really. You don't know how you have helped me.

Heather,
Thank you so much. I had been struggling with the Porch/Minney line and kinda gave up. Being here in South Africa, I have tried to search...but have not quite got the knack yet. Am new to this. Hence the very BIG thank you for your interest.

Heather

Hi there,
I know that William Mark Minney had a sister called Rebecca .....don't know if that would help.

Heather

Heather Report 25 Jan 2008 16:15

Its quite strange as names like that should shoot out of the pages.

From the sounds of it, the shoe guy could be your ancestor though but without the certificate ..............It may be the birth cert will throw light on it all.

Fanny can be a name in its own right or a nick name for Frances.

Sue

Sue Report 25 Jan 2008 16:12

Hi Heather, Thank you - that is my Grandmother's birth reference. Doris May Minney. Will get the certificate. I am not 100% sure of Lilly Porch's birth year (using my Mom's memory....and she is 78 LOL). Lilly could have been a Lillian because she was called Lill or Lilly. She had a sister they called Fanny - Mom doesn't know her real name though. We don't know where they were born.
