William Minney was my great grandfather, born abt 1 Feb 1877. He married Lilly (Lillie) Portch born abt 13 Jan 1878. They left the UK with their daughter Doris May Minney born 4 Sept 1907 in Birmingham, for South Africa when Doris was a child.
According to the marriage certificate of William and Lilly his father was also a William Minney.
I need help to expand the Minney line - anyone?

What a lovely name. Have to say I cant see a Mark Minney in Brum, but there is a William. Do you know what his occupation was? This guy is a boot cutter

Hmm, with names like that the marriage search should be easy but nothing showing yet - here is Doris May's birth ref though if you need to buy the certificate:

Hi there, Just chatted to my Mom - (his granddaughter). She says he could have been William Mark rather. Just before he left England he drove trams but she says he was very good with shoes because when in South Africa he had a business in making and repairing shoes.

Hi Heather, Thank you - that is my Grandmother's birth reference. Doris May Minney. Will get the certificate. I am not 100% sure of Lilly Porch's birth year (using my Mom's memory....and she is 78 LOL). Lilly could have been a Lillian because she was called Lill or Lilly. She had a sister they called Fanny - Mom doesn't know her real name though. We don't know where they were born.

Heather

Heather Report 25 Jan 2008 16:15

Its quite strange as names like that should shoot out of the pages.

From the sounds of it, the shoe guy could be your ancestor though but without the certificate ..............It may be the birth cert will throw light on it all.

Fanny can be a name in its own right or a nick name for Frances.

Sue Report 25 Jan 2008 16:26

Hi there,
I know that William Mark Minney had a sister called Rebecca .....don't know if that would help.

Heather

Heather Report 25 Jan 2008 16:26

HOORAH, found the marriage, different spelling for the wife: Now you can buy that cert for £7 from GRO online and we can get a firm hold on the right line :)

Heather,
Thank you so much. I had been struggling with the Porch/Minney line and kinda gave up. Being here in South Africa, I have tried to search...but have not quite got the knack yet. Am new to this. Hence the very BIG thank you for your interest.

I am surprised that you dont mention any earlier kids than Doris - 6 years gap before she was born?

Heather

Im going to leave you now as you have a huge amount to take in there. And several certs to buy!

Sue

Sue Report 25 Jan 2008 16:52

Oh wow.....now we have it. Doris was the only daughter of William and Lillie. Its William that had a sister called Rebecca and Lillie had a sister called Fanny. You have the right Lillie now. I will order Certificates - thanks for the website. I do subscribe to Ancestory.com and Genes reunited. Being new to this I have found it difficult to 'dig' but thanks - really. You don't know how you have helped me.

Heather

Heather Report 25 Jan 2008 17:03

Yes, Fanny is with Lillie in that 1901 census. I cant see a Rebecca with William though. It didnt help that you had a wrong spelling for Lillies surname.

Get some of those certs and you will be able to place them exactly.

Lillies parents married when he was in the army - they may be an interesting line.

You should now be able to follow some of the info on the ancestry site.
