If this is your direct line - although you can "manage" with the parents marriage certificate it is good practice to order birth cert as well. This gives you a clear record of evidence when you're tracking back. It will also give you exact date of birth, an address at the time - which may differ from address(es) at marriage and father's occupation - which again may differ from that on the marriage cert. So all the details help you build that picture.

Yes, you can order the birth certificate online from this address:-

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates

This is the information you need:-

Alfred W. Wareham, mother's maiden name Tucker
March. qtr. 1931, volume number 2a, page number 763

Make sure you tick the box to say "yes" the full GRO reference is known.

It will cost you £7.

However it is his parent's marriage certificate that will help you most.

OK - GRO

Follow the links to ordering a marriage certificate. (There's a lot of useful info on their site about ordering certs so it's well worth reading some of it.) If you are ordering on line make sure you tick the box to say that you know the GRO index reference - that's the volume and page number.

I looked at the marriage details again.

Charles A Wareham. 1930. June quarter. Kingston. 2a 1263. (married Ethel Childs or Tucker - so we can assume at this stage that she had been married before and it's not clear which is her maiden name and which her first married name. The cert will clarify all of that for you.)

You need the registration district as well I think. ...

Hold on - I'll look it up.

You need to order the marriage certificate from the General Records Office - GRO - You will need the volume and page numbers to do this. Online it will cost you £7 but you can order them by phone (I think it costs about £8.50 by phone).

When I order a cert on line I tend to just use one of the names - so in your case I would use Charles Wareham and not mention the wife at all.

Good luck - come back with any other questions. Don't worry you will get used to it!

You can't look at any census after 1901........

Perhaps you are thinking of the wrong resource........do you actually mean birth, marriage and death records? (bmd)

When was your father born?
