Looking at Albert's middle name, could this be a first marriage?

I've searched for marriages but haven't found one yet with a link to a William Brown.

So I searched on the births of Ellen and Albert, thinking that if you were able to order one of those, it should clarify whether Crowther was the mother's maiden name. If they were born out of wedlock the father's details section will probably be left blank (unless they lied about being wed as some of them did).

Anyway, have come up with these for Haslingden district.

Name: Sarah Ellen Crowther
Year of Registration: 1883
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Haslingden
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8e
Page: 107

OR

Name: Ellen Crowther
Year of Registration: 1884
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Haslingden
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8e
Page: 140

and the boy:

Name: Albert Isherwood Crowther
Year of Registration: 1887
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Haslingden
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8e
Page: 132 (

The middle name of Isherwood could well have been his real father's surname.

Might be worth investigating those.

heres Ellen birth ,that cert will tell you if Sarah was married.

Births Mar 1884

Crowther Ellen Haslingden 8e 140

and Albert

The cert will have her father's name - if known - so that would be her maiden name.

Where have you looked for the marriage?

freebmd allows you to enter both names........if you leave out any other info apart from the county, all possible matches will be posted

Sarah J Crowther married William Brown and on 1891 census had 3 children Ellen 7
Albert 3
and Henry 2

On 1901 census Ellen and Albert have the surname Crowther and are down as step children.

I want to send for the marriage certificate but cann't find the reference number to order it.
I don't know if Ellen and Albert were illiegitimate or whether Sarah had been married before.
Would the certificate tell me if Sarah had been married before and her maiden name.
Also I need it for her father's name so I can find her parents.

Sarah was born about 1860 in Bury Lancs and the 2 children in Haslingden Lancs.

Hoping someone can help please.
