I was right the first time ... this is 1891 (not 1881 as I then convinced myself it was):

Name: Elvenia Mondy
Age: 54
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1837
Relation: Mother
Gender: Female
Where born: Hull, Yorkshire, England

Civil Parish: Toxteth Park
Ecclesiastical parish: St Paul
Town: Liverpool
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Toxteth Park
Sub-registration district: Toxteth Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 54

Elvenia Mondy 54
John Mondy 19

If the marriage didn't take, or she was widowed shortly afterward, she may have reverted to her children's surname.

Looks like Samuel died, because by 1891, she's back to Monday/Mondy and is widowed

Nyah nyah!

Has anyone found Samuel anywhere in any census??

The most common mistranscription for Bernard is BEMARD, but there will be others, I can tell you from long painful experience with a similar sername.

... Sername? You know ... Burnard, Bernard ... surname, sername ...

Lewella

Lewella Report 21 Jan 2008 02:19

This one is a possible, but you'd have to get the marriage certificate to confirm father's name

Given the dearth of any Samuel Bernards of that vintage anywhere in the census, I'd guess there isn't likely to be more than one, and that would be him!

Morning Lew, Kathryn ,and all, from the Tropical North of Queensland, I have looked up all that you have given me, and it has raised more questions than it has answered !!! I think the Samuel Bernard must have " Shot thought ", on Elvenia after their marrage in 1881, as I can't find him or her after 1891, also she and her first husband seem to have had on other boy Henry Thomas Monday born1859 in East Stonehouse. Did you come across him in your " travels "John we have traced up until his death in Liverpool in 1953 but the other 3 are no where to be found can you help in this????
Regards
Sheila

So he's the one in the 1871 census, in Lew's second post:

Maria Leaf 66
Henry Monday 11 (born Devon)

And this is his birth:

Name: Henry Thomas Monday
Year of Registration: 1859
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: East Stonehouse
County: Devon
Volume: 5b
Page: 265

and I'm killing time because I don't see him in 1881 ... or 1891 ... or 1901, even just searching by surname mond* with birth date and location.

Also not seeing him in the death index.

I wonder, might he have emigrated??

Not to Canada, from what I can tell from the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Or the 1910 US census. Not in the NSW BMDs.

There's a Henry Monday marriage in West Derby in 1886. No trace later ...

Hey, here's John in 1901 though:

Name: John Monday
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Ann
Gender: Male
Where born: Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Toxteth Park
Ecclesiastical parish: St John the Baptist
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Toxteth Park
Sub-registration district: Toxteth Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 38
Household schedule number: 210

Ann Monday 29
Annie Monday 3
Elvena Monday 6
John Monday 28
Mary Monday 5
Mary Monday 1

Here's a possibility that might be better than nothing, in 1901.

Name: Wm Monday

Civil Parish: Ashton Under Lyne
Ecclesiastical parish: Ashton under Lyme St Michael and All Angels
Town: Ashton Under Lyne
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Ashton-under-Lyne
Sub-registration district: Ashton Town
ED, institution, or vessel: 22

The page is a list of addresses with names but without ages, places of birth, occupations or relationships, with some vacant properties in between. The previous page has better information, with households living in caravans. The list he is in consists of unaccompanied men, most at their own addresses. His is:

24 Oldham Road.

Possibly transient workers?

Heh, one of those serendipitous coincidences. Google can't find his address, or 24 Warrington, another address in the list. But on that search, it offered me a bunch of commercial listings, one of which is on Old St, another address in the list.

Seems to be the central core, but nothing to help us.

Oh! It's a circus. Seriously. Well actually, it seems to say menagerie. The people on the previous page are on the Market Ground, and there are showman/exhibitors ... and a lion tamer, and a giant.

William may just have run off and joined the circus!

Sheila

Sheila Report 22 Jan 2008 22:27

Oh how nice to run away to join a circus, one of my ancesters on my Grandmother's side ran away with the gypsy's and can not be found LOL I think that we have found Samuel, HE did run away and died in 1893 in Camberwell -- sending away to the GRO for proof --still no joy on Elvena's death (Her name is spelt so many ways ) or Henry Thomas and now I have run out of ideas

Further to a bit more exchange of info with Sheila, here's Elvenia etc. in 1901:

Considered this death first:

Deaths Dec 1899
Barnard Elvina 52 Westbury S. 6a 227

Then checked out this marriage:

Marriages Dec 1900
Barnard Elvenea Liverpool 8b 21

to Evan Jones or Thomas Christopher Rowan ...

Door number two, husband number one:

Name: Elwinis Jones
Age: 65
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1836
Relation: Wife
Gender: Female
Where born: Hull, Yorkshire, England

Civil Parish: Toxteth Park
Ecclesiastical parish: St James
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Occupation: Office cleaner
Condition as to marriage: Married

Registration district: Toxteth Park
Sub-registration district: Toxteth Park
ED, institution, or vessel: 4
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 84

Elwinis Jones 65

No husband to home. On a page with dock labourers and other marine workers; he could have been another mariner.

JaneyCanuck

And then this would likely be her death:

Name: Elvina Jones
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1835
Year of Registration: 1907
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Age at Death: 72
District: Toxteth Park
County: Lancashire

Well, I don't do hugs as a rule (people who kiss and hug for greeting make me nuts; I'm a handshaker), but I'll take these ones. ;)

Have fun!
