Please can someone give me some guidance?
I have
Ada Addison married to George Lawes 02/04/1899 St Pauls, Southwark. Ada was 20 a spinster and her father was Thomas Addison (carman). Thomas & Hannah Addison were the witnesses.
Going back I have the birth cert for Ada
25/09/1878 St Saviour
Fathers name Thomas Addison (Porter)
Mothers name Hannah Addison formerley Shelton
I then searched for a marriage for Thomas, the only one I could find was 1877 Q4 St. Saviour 1d 6
This turned out to be to Hannah Snellings
Thomas Addison 22 Bachelor (Groom) father Robert Addison (Tailor)
Hannah Snellings 27 Spinster father John Snellings (Coal Porter)

Help please, to sort this out!

Any suggestions?

Dee

Ada's birth cert will give Mum's maiden name

but as the 1891 census for Ada give's Thomas' occupation as coachman/groom I suspect you have the correct marriage.

There is no marriage apparently listed for a Thomas Addison with a Shelton

Could whoever reported the birth of the child have simply got mama's surname wrong??

Have you thought about getting the birth certificate of another child in the family to see what that says??

There is a Hannah born ca 1881 for example.

There is a Hannah Snellings, grandaughter on the 1851 census.

Hannah Snelling

Where born: Ealing, Middlesex, England

Civil Parish: Ealing
Town: Old Brentford
County/Island: Middlesex

John Snelling 55
Sophia Snelling 16

Class: HO107; Piece: 1699; Folio: 317; Page: 39; GSU roll: 193607.

Note there is an Emma on the census, and then there is this marriage between an Emma Snelling and there is a William CHELTON on the same page..

Emma Snelling
Year of Registration: 1858
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: Brentford
County: Middlesex

William Chelton on same page.

Just wondering if Emma was Hannah's mum, married a Chelton (which became Shelton).

Could she have 'made up' John Snellings coal porter?

Gail.

Just for the record, here is the marriage registration information.

Emma could have married either William Chelton OR George Worley, unless we can find proof

Diane

Diane Report 20 Jan 2008 03:57

Birth registration for a Hannah Snelling would fit in with the marriage for mother Emma to a Chelton/Chilton/ Shelton also birth area fits with Hannah as an Addison

Hannah Snelling
Year of Registration: 1849
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Brentford
County: Middlesex
Volume: 3
Page: 11

Probably that is where the confusion with the surname for Ada's mother comes in as Hannah would appear to have used her registered surname to marry and her mothers married name of Shelton (marriage after Hannah's birth ) to register her daughter

Sylvia

Thanks for all the time you put into this, it's certainly helped me move forward, I just couldn't get my head round it, it took me a fair time to think it through this morning.

Thank you also to Claire, Gail and Diane, if I've missed anyone, thank you to you also
