Vivienne

Age wasn't so important in the 1800s as it is now - people were probably only asked their age once every 10 years (for the census) and when they got married.

I always think it is best to go by the age on the earliest census you can find them on. Some of mine stay the same age for 20 years!

Also, the age on a death cert is only as good as the knowledge of the person giving it. I know my sons would not know my year of birth if asked; neither would they know my maiden name without looking it up on their birth certs!

- it's quite endearing, though, the vagueness that some of our ancestors adopt when encountering officialdom. I can see that the older inhabitants will start adding to their age as they get into their 80s and 90's - and 50 year olds either believing that they are as old as they feel (i.e. STILL YOUNG!), or perhaps trying to avoid ageism. And after all, the box doesn't give them the space to state that it is none of the business of the nosey state...

I suspect that secretly I admire those ancestors who didn't always give the precise true and correct answer consistently, for whatever reason

(sorry Vivienne, I know that doesn't help at the moment!)

[Ed - just seen your latest - LOL - but seriously, once you find him, you might be able to look back on it and laugh??]

Kay???? Report 18 Jan 2008 21:44

dont take census age as to be the right age as some were rounded down to a whole nunber some up to whole number,,plus who gave the census information may not have been the man himself and who ever just gave est guess,,,,,,,,,1901 is a little more to be belived ,but yet again often is wrong,,,

do you have their death certificates which could give a more truthful age,??

 Lindsey*

Lindsey* Report 18 Jan 2008 21:40

Quite often they couldnt read or write , therefore they didnt know what was being put down on their behalf.

FannyByGaslight Report 18 Jan 2008 21:37

hi ivy .. the reason i was so cross was that on the 1891 census the groom was 40 and on the 1901 he was 45 so i thought the m c would resolve the age... kind of...and in this instance i KNOW i have the right people on the census which made it even more teeth grinding ..
thanks ..vivienne..

Hi Vivienne,

You're right, we ought to be much more cautious when advising. Free BMD at this address:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/Certificates.html

simply says "some or all of the following information be may included" on the certificate.

What year was the marriage? Is it possible to cross-reference to a census to pick up the bride and groom's ages?

It may just be possible that the father's name Richard helps you to narrow this down - Richard is not quite as common a name as John and William.

Can you console yourself that you do have a little extra information? For instance, the church they married in, so that you can check whether the parish registers of that church have other information about your family?

Yours in sympathy (because I've found less and less info from marriages as I track backwards..)

Kay????

Kay???? Report 18 Jan 2008 21:27

Vivienne,

what year is the certificate for,,,?

this infomattion is often found on a marriage certificate,,,,,,,so no guarantees alll what you;re looking for will be on it,,,but more often than not it is,,so getting the certificate is always reccomended,,,,,,

 Lindsey*

Lindsey* Report 18 Jan 2008 21:23

I have just recieved the same, that is to say not every certificate can or will be succesful, don.t feel you have wasted your tine as it means there just isnt anymore information.
