Passage to India ?

Wondering if anyone can help. I am helping a 'new found cousin' with her family rumour about a relative going to India.
His name is Joseph Parkinson b c1837 in Skipton, Yorkshire. We have traced him on the 1861 and 1871 census. Then on the 1881 and 1891 his wife Eliza is noted as being married but no husband with her. Joseph is back with Eliza on the 1901. His occupation as engine fitter, and engineer seems correct.

Would Joseph have had a job in India and how do we find out IF he did go ?
Hoping for some advice
