Wow! this is amazing. thanx for the information. I really do appreciate this. The interesting thing that has come of this is my wifes Grandfather was orphanded at 4 years, so now it begs the question who looked after him. Will have to wait for the 1911 census.

James 38, is a widower on the 1881 census with his son Enoch, 14. He's living with Thomas & Ellen Hadfield where he's listed as brother.

There were 2 James Ridgeway's in the area both around the same age. 1 one the son of Thomas, the other the son of Samuel.
1871 Samuel's son was still single but it looks like the other was married to Betty

This gets more intruiging. From the death entry James Ridgway is 55, but that means he was born in 1845. From the census in 1891 that puts him at 44, which makes him born in 1847, yet there is a birth registration in 1848. Difficult finding the pieces to this puzzle, but I suppose James could have been illiterate, and not known.

Thanx to all for the information. I now know why I had some difficulties as James ridgway was already dead. Interestingly Elizabeth passed away in 1904, which left my wifes Grandfather an orphan when he was 4 years old.

Seems I got myself a little screwed here, and have probably followed the wrong track and given my wife family that does not belong in her tree.
Anyway here is my problem.
My Wifes grandfather Arthur Ridgway, B:(Oct 1900 Stockport) D:(August 1942 - Simons Town).
Parents: James Ridgway B: Unsure, but think 1870+/-, and Elizabeth Hannah Ridgway( Nee Dean) B: 1864 Stockport (I think). d: 1904.

Problem I have found, is I cannot find any correlation in the 1901 census of James ridgway, and Elizabeth Hannah Ridgway with young Arthur.
I believe what I may have done is linked another James Ridgway 1845 to Elizabeth, and gone off track from here onwards.

My question is this. Has any one ever come across, or in this case ever not found relatives, that should have been in the census??
Am I searching the census incorrectly?
Any ideas??
