Iv'e just spent another couple of hours trying to work out the National Archives site and still not getting very far with it. Also looked at the Boer war roll of honours, no sign of him there, but that obviously only lists who died. Any suggestions on how I might find out if was there?
With thanks

I think I'm begining to find my way around the National archices site now have managed to work out how to see Medal cards for the 1st world war, there are a few Alfred Boswell's on there but not certain if any are mine. Still can't work out how to find out who was in the Army for the Boer war though any advice on how to go about this appreciated.

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for looking but I think this Alfred is most likely the one registered in the bmd Mar Q 1873 Northampton 3b 93.
But I will keep it in mind.

Hi Clare

This could be nothing but i was searching Ancestry for you and found this

1901 England Census
about Alfred Bowell
Name: Alfred Bowell
[Alfred Boswell]
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Elizabeth
Gender: Male
Where born: Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England

Civil Parish: Kingsthorpe
Ecclesiastical parish: Kingsthorpe
Town: Kingsthorpe
County/Island: Northamptonshire
Country: England

Street address:

Occupation:

Condition as to marriage:

Education:

Employment status: View Image

Registration district: Northampton
Sub-registration district: All Saints
ED, institution, or vessel: 18
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 79
Household Members: Name Age
Alfred Bowell 28
Elizabeth Bowell 23
Evelyn Bowell 1
Violet Bowell 6 months

An alternative name of Alfred Boswell is placed next to his name and a note of a transcription error for the Bowell surname.I know birthplace is wrong, but often when people moved around they put birthplace down as place they were living. The wife is from London.
I would check army records as suggested but this something to think about and maybe look into.

Michelle

The boar war was on in 1901, could he have gone into the army, if so he would not be listed on the 1901 census but try searching for army records on the national archives site
