Hi, I'm trying to find any info on my great grandmother Annie Goodman. Unsure of DOB place of Birth etc, all I have is my grandmothers birth cert which gives Annies occupation as a "cocoa nut stall assistant" ??? My gran was born 1907 in Sudbury and on her school records it gives her name as "Florence Annie Berry (nee Goodman)" I can on assume she was adopted.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards Jan

That was just me, attempting to find a Berry-Goodman marriage after Florence's birth, in case that was the reason for the name change, but to no avail.

Is it a correct assumption that Annie was unmarried when Florence was born?

Florence's birth, for ref:

Name: Florence Annie Goodman
Year of Registration: 1907
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Sudbury
County: Essex, Suffolk
Volume: 4a

Your Annie comes from away. There are no Goodman deaths and no marriages recorded in Sudbury up to the late 19-teens, and only three births other than Florence, all much earlier:

Charles Goodman 1874 Jan-Feb-Mar Sudbury Essex, Suffolk
Emma Emily Goodman 1872 Jul-Aug-Sep Sudbury Essex, Suffolk
Florence Annie Goodman 1907 Jul-Aug-Sep Sudbury Essex, Suffolk
George Henry Goodman 1869 Oct-Nov-Dec Sudbury Essex, Suffolk

In 1901, the George and Charles there are both married and living in Watford.

There is an Annie in Watford in 1901 who might be considered, in case there's a connection:

Name: Annie G Goodman
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1884
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Watford, Hertfordshire, England

Civil Parish: Watford
Ecclesiastical parish: Watford St Andrew
County/Island: Hertfordshire

but these are just the beginnings of musings here. ;)

I'm not seeing that Annie in 1891. And not seeing a matching birth; this comes closest, and it isn't close:

Name: Annie Goodman
Year of Registration: 1890
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Watford
County: Hertfordshire
Volume: 3a
Page: 570

The only Annie G Goodman with a birthdate in that range is:

Name: Annie Gertrude Goodman
Year of Registration: 1882
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Aston
County: Warwickshire
Volume: 6d
Page: 272

and she's not to be found in 1891 or 1901.

Do you suppose your Annie might have been a scholar at the Convent of the Faithful Virgin in Croydon in 1891? ;)

No father on birth cert and yes mothers maiden name Goodman. The birth address on my grans birth cert is 29 Church Street, I have looked at 1901 census but the family living there appears to be well established, suppose a lot can happen in 6 years. I was wondering where they made chocolate in those days being as Annies occupation was "cocoa nut stall assistant" unless it was a mis-spelling and she belonged to a fair!?!? :-)

JaneyCanuck

I was reading that as "coconut" -- "cocoa nut" is an archaic version, I think. This description seems equally archaic ;) --

http://www.birdnature.com/feb1899/coconut.html

THE COCOA-NUT.
"THE fruit of the cocoa-nut palm, (Cocos nucifera), which is the most useful tree of all its tribe to the natives of the regions in which it grows, is one of the most valuable and important of commercial products. On the Malabar and Corvomandel coasts of India the trees grow in vast numbers; and in Ceylon, which is peculiarly well situated for their cultivation, it is estimated that twenty millions of the trees flourish. ..."

I would think it was a market stall, where the Victorian shoppers picked up the delicacies that Empire brought them. ;)

I suppose the father's name on your gran's marriage certificate is blank? Or, tsk, did she not marry either? If so, was it as Berry or Goodman?

I don't suppose there's any chance her school records actually say Perry?

Name: Florence A Goodman
Year of Registration: 1918
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Spouse's Surname: Perry
District: Bermondsey (1913 Onw)
County: London
Volume: 1d
Page: 368

Your gran would have been 11 then.

Thanks for all of that....I've got a lot to study, when I get my go on the computer....3 kids & a husband all trying to have a go...all in bed hence lateness.
She was def a Berry, marriage records give her name as Florence A G Berry, G being Goodman so she was still using it and her fathers name is given as Herbert Berry. She married grandad - Robert Thorogood in June q 1936. I have their marriage cert somewhere, tidied away for christmas!

to Ettie May Garwood or Eliza Emily Hammond.

A thought -- is there an address on those school records of hers?

You could see who was there in 1911:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/1911census/

If your hunch is right and she was adopted by an unrelated family, that could give you some names.

Tremendous!

I got my first contact with my own most mysterious family about a year ago. Of course, she turned out to know nothing at all. I'd discovered that my gr-grfather Monck was born Hill and had siblings including an Emma. My first and only contact is descended from Emma ... about whom she had no info, not even her surname ... other than having always been told she was a Miss Montmorency. Go figure.

Good luck!
