Member Since: March 2004 Posts: 129 Send Message	Still struggling with the following: THOMAS Bentham was born about 1827 and married AMELIA Winrow in 1849 in Standish, Wigan and then ELLEN Challenor (Challener) in 1851 after Amelia's death in childbirth. His father was JOHN Bentham and underlooker and his mother was either ELIZABETH or BETTY. There are a number of Johns around at the time and it has proved impossible to tease out which one is Thomas's father. He called his first daughter Elizabeth and an Elizabeth was a witness at his second marriage. There is also an Enoch in the family of John and Betty and Thomas called one of his sons Enoch. I know that Betty is a diminutive of Elizabeth but not sure that this is the case here. Further confusion comes from IGI where I think, two families have been confused. Do you know anything? ALEXANDER Bentham was born about 1800 in Croston(we think), Lancashire. He is easy to follow in the subsequent census returns but before 1841 there is no sign of him at all !
