I do not know about records in Ireland only that a lot were destroyed. The above link may help.

Hi Ladies, thanks for all your help I got Lawrences Brith Certicate address matches census.. which also means the surname on census should be Power not Powell ..

Does anyone know any good websites where I can now move my search to Ireland to trace James Power and Marie butler ?

Edited to say: got yr message Sharron, ta -- always best to post replies in the thread though! That way anyone else who could help, or to whom the info might be useful, can see it. Let us know when you get the cert!

Now I must turn my attention to this John Transvaal Burtt ...

Lewella Report 7 Jan 2008 22:26

Sharron did pm me, Kathryn.

My Richardsons come from Scotland in about 1890 (about 120 years) and my Burtts came from US around 1865 (143 years), although I'm started to wonder about the Burtt lot. Nobody can find anything about him in the US and one of his grandsons was called John Transvaal Burtt which leads me to think there is a South African connection!

The blind leading the blind, when it comes to English geography, eh?

How far removed are you from your English roots, anyhow? (For me, it's a century on one side, 75 years on the other, me being the second generation born in Canada.)

I wonder whether Sharron will rejoin the conversation.

Kathryn, I just had a look on multimap. Gorton is actually a district in Manchester, the registration district is Chorlton

Yes, it's far to coincidental, Kathryn

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jan 2008 01:21

And, Lew, in 1901, Catherine -- Katie:

Name: Catherine Power
Year of Registration: 1893
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Chorlton
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 853

I assume all those "Gorton"s in the transcriptions are really Chorlton.

The date and place data got omitted from your post Janice, because of the pointy brackets:

James Power
Spouse: Maria Butler
[1876] [Dublin, Dublin, Ireland]

Edit -- What am I saying, "Janice" -- Lew! The night shift is on ...

Lewella

Lewella Report 7 Jan 2008 01:17

I have to agree with you Kathryn, particularly with the mention of "Bertha"

The Ellen and Mary in those unsourced birth records do match up perfectly with the daughters in the household in the two censuses. -- Oh, I just realized the ones in the censuses are shown as born in Dublin, so that's an excellent match. And how common a name was Lawrence Power -- how many infants with that name and Irish-born parents would there be in Lancashire in 1901??

Possible marriage:

IGI Individual Record FamilySearchâ„¢ International

James Power

Event(s):
Marriages:
Spouse: Maria Butler
Marriage: 1876 Dublin, Ireland

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jan 2008 01:04

Ah, so the 1901 household is probably not Sharron's people? If her migration info is correct.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 7 Jan 2008 01:04

Same parents for a Mary, same unsourced record type:

Mary Power
Birth: 05 FEB 1877 Dublin, Dublin, Ireland
Father: James Power
Mother: Maria Butler

There are Power births in Waterford, but not to a James and Maria specifically.

But hey. The 1901 shows Lawrence and some siblings as born in England. ... But your info is that he was born in Ireland ...

This looks like the one in that census:

Name: Lawrence Power
Year of Registration: 1900
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Chorlton
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 866
