Family tree is progressing. I now have the marriage certificate of Gustav Emil Conrad Naewiger and Rosina Cox. The Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire is where Rosina Cox resided until her marraige. But I have yet to find out why Conrad got to Oxford, unless there was something to do with his trade as a tailor?

Hi Barbara and Ozibird. Just to say I have received a copy of my Grand Father's birth certicate (Victor Hugo) in the post today and confirms my Great Grand Fathers name of Naewiger. I will continue with my research. Many thanks for the tips regarding the surname, would have been lost without your help.

When you think of it Nawiger could easily be anglicised to Navier with the German pronunciation of 'w' as 'v', & their gutteral 'g'.

Notice that Conrad's first names match the initials of the telephone directory. It looks like this family use their 3rd names; perhaps a Prussian tradition.

I'd love to know how Chipping Norton came into the picture.

Hi there.
The name of my great grand father is Conrad Navier.and lived in HULL.Not sure what his wife was called.
He was a tailor by profession and he is listed in the 1911 phone directories with initials G.E. but I have no idea to the names. He had 4 sons, Conrad, Harry, Percy and Victor (my grand father). He died between 24th July 1915 and 11th December 1915.
