Find Ancestors

My grandfather Norman Charles Chamley born 1916 Lambeth was married before he married my grandmother. All i have on the first wife is that her name was Lillian, she died 25th April 1947 aged 26yrs ( Eton Vol 6a page 303 2nd Qtr 1947).
Born around 1921 and came from London.
Can anyone maybe find a Maiden name for this person.
Any help appreciated

No, no children that we know of, well nan never said anything about any and she married him six months after Lillian had died.
Now come to think of it there would not have been because he kicked up a fuss when dad was born saying that he wanted a daughter not a son.

Sorry Samantha, I have checked the marriage index from Jan 1938 until she died and I cannot see a marriage for Norman Chamley at all.

Norman C Chamley mothers maiden name Collins born Lambeth vol 1d page 795, 2nd qtr 1916.

Hi i have all of Normans family ie, parents and siblings and his marriage to my grandmother just dont have a damn thing on the first wife.

Norman C Chamley married Lydia J Hatcher in Eton vol 6a page 839, 4th qtr 1947.
There is no other marriage checked from 1934 onwards.

Samamtha, silly question, but does it say widower on his marriage cert to your nan in Q4 1947?

I have to say that i dont know, and ive looked at the damn thing so many times, i find it all so interesting looking at all the old documents, but i have seen Lillians grave/headstone and she is a Chamley, Norman used to live next door to my nan so she remembers him being married.

Suppose the only other thing would be to order a death cert and see what that has to say for itself, its got to have something on it.

Samantha, is it at all possible that they just lived together and she took his name without actually marrying? (possibly just told everyone they were?)

Maybe, nan did say she came from a poor family and when they got married no-one from her side of the family showed atall (quite sad really).
When Norman married my nan he still had Lillians picture hanging on the lounge wall for years after until my nan had enough one day and told him to remove it.

Samantha, unfortunately the new information does not really assist us, we have checked the marriage index and a first marriage does not appear in there.
Have also checked Lancs BMD site, and no marriage on there either in Salford, a few in Lancs but not the correct ones between 1930 and 1947.

Dont think we're going to get anywhere on this one are we?
