The notation is just a little message beside the name on the transcribed version giving another possible name. I think someone just got confused because the next family was named Smales but didn't have a head, it started with daughter and they must have thought she was a daughter of James.
They're Erly on the 1881 and 1901 census.

There's a marriage on Free BMD of James Erly and Margaret Moran March quarter 1871, Wakefield which covers Horbury.
Think it might be them?

hello again Margaret, yes that is the correct marriage, James Erly married Margaret Moran. Thank you for finding it, I wasn't sure what year they married.
